Juneteenth celebrations this year in the Central District will include one of the week’s biggest events in Seattle at Jimi Hendrix Park. The celebrations marking the holiday have been underway including Sunday’s Revival Juneteenth Pop-up Market at the Midtown Square development at 23rd and Union.

Organizer Donna Moodie of theĀ Urban League of Metropolitan SeattleĀ says Sunday’s market grew out of efforts reviving small businesses after the pandemic.

“It’s amazing to me. Probably one of my favorite things that we do,” Moodie said.

Suspect shot and killed by police in Central District was maintenance man with history of threats at Urban League Village apartments

Police say security video shows Taylor during his deadly shooting attack in the museum and apartment complex parking lot

The suspect in a deadly shooting shot and killed by Seattle Police Tuesday night in the Central District was a resident and maintenance employee at apartments in the buildingĀ also home to the Northwest African American Museum whose behavior people familiar with the circumstances say had become more and more threatening.

Wednesday night, SPD released an edited video showing clips from building security video that captured the parking lot shooting that left one person dead and another critically wounded and police body-worn video showing what SPD says is Taylor approaching police on S Massachusetts and raising his gun as officers opened up with a hail of gunfire, killing the Black suspect. As Jimi Hendrix Memorial Peace & Love March for Equity crosses the CD, a call to address Seattle’s ‘co-option’ of the legend — and move his statue off Broadway

The King County Equity Now group that has been pushing through the summer on local officials to meet the demands of Black Lives Matter protests and for more robust spending on community and investment programs for the Black community in the Central District is turning its attention to the remembrance of one of Seattle’s legendary Black artists. It has been 50 years since Seattle son Jimi Hendrix died.

UPDATE: Tina Hendrix, Jimi’s niece and founder of the Hendrix Music Academy, tells CHS that the event was organized and pulled together by the academy and volunteers after other organizers pulled out. “There were a lot of artists out there in the rain for Jimi,” Hendrix said. Hendrix said she hopes to see energy from the day continue despite some of the challenges organizing the memorial event. “There were hurdles and obstacles,” Hendrix said. “This was an historic day. It was in the rain and we did it.”
