First Hill ax murder suspect charged with second deadly homeless attack

The First Hill man jailed and facing trial in the ax murder of a sleeping camper in February has been charged with the murder of a second homeless man 12 days earlier in a 12th Ave alley.

Liam Kryger is now facing two counts of first degree murder.

CHS was first to report police had linked the 25 year old to the additional killing.

Prosecutors say mobile phone and video evidence shows Kryger carrying an ax behind the office building of the Seattle Men’s Chorus where 68-year-old Paul Ewell was found murdered early on February 10th with injuries “created by a heavy sharp object similar to a hatchet, axe, or maul” indicating “there were at least three such strikes to his head,” according to the SPD report on the killing.

Prosecutors allege Kryger killed again less than two weeks later when he murdered 52-year-old Daravuth Van with an ax as he camped near First Hill’s Town Hall event venue. Continue reading

Suspect pleads not guilty in deadly Capitol Hill Station stabbing

The man charged with murder in the Capitol Hill Station stabbing that killed Corey Bellett has pleaded not guilty and will continue to be held on $3 million bond after a court appearance Wednesday.

Shawn Patrick Moore, 26, pleaded not guilty to charges of second degree murder and intimidating a witness in the case surrounding the slaying of Bellett, a 37-year-old restaurant worker on his way home after a Saturday brunch shift at Capitol Hill’s Harry’s Fine Foods.

Prosecutors say Moore killed the victim in an altercation over a run-in on the escalator that grew into a fight on the light rail platform. Continue reading

Suspect charged with second degree murder in Capitol Hill Station stabbing

The King County Prosecutor’s office has announced it has charged the suspect in Saturday’s deadly stabbing on the Capitol Hill Station train platform with second degree murder and intimidating a witness.

Shawn Patrick Moore, 26, was jailed following his arrest Monday by a U.S. Marshals task force that tracked him down in Eatonville.

Police and prosecutors says Moore killed Corey Bellett in a fight sparked when the Harry’s Fine Foods chef brushed by Moore and another man on the light rail escalator as the restaurant worker was on his way to catch a train home after a Saturday brunch shift. Continue reading

30-year sentence in 2021 Capitol Hill traffic stop murder arrest

Young

The man arrested three years ago in a 4 AM Capitol Hill traffic stop driving a blood splattered car in which police found a 9mm handgun, two fired rounds, a bullet, and a half kilo of drugs has been found guilty of murder and sentenced to 30 years in jail.

In February, a jury found Bryson Morgan guilty of first degree murder for the January 2021 killing of 21-year-old Autumn Young. Court records show Morgan was sentenced last week to 360 months for the crime.

CHS reported here on the charge leveled against Morgan after his arrest as Young was found stripped naked and shot to death near Seward Park.

Morgan had previous run-ins with law enforcement including being charged in 2018 with felony harassment and threats after students alleged he made threats to shoot and bomb the Seattle University campus, causing his classroom to flee. The incident happened the same day as a deadly school shooting in Santa Fe. Morgan was later acquitted of the charges as lawyers argued his statements were hypotheticals about the possibility of shooting people and not specific threats to the campus. Morgan was also the subject of an Extreme Risk Protection Order requested by SPD requiring him to prove to the court he no longer had access to firearms. Continue reading

Le Morte D’Meliora? Struggling restaurant that replaced the Canterbury hit by unpaid rent, taxes

The Capitol Hill “new American” restaurant that replaced ye olde Canterbury Ale House is struggling with the oldest of business challenges: taxes and rent.

Meliora, which has been “temporarily closed” since February while the ownership said it was undertaking a restart of the concept, is behind on three months’ rent and owes more than $30,000, according to a notice posted last week by the building’s landlord.

Meanwhile, a King County Superior Court filing shows the business owed the state more than $40,000 in unpaid taxes. Continue reading

From Kryger’s Facebook page

The 25-year-old First Hill resident charged in the killing of a homeless man outside Seattle’s Town Hall has pleaded not guilty.

Liam Kryger is charged with first degree murder.

King County Prosecutors say Kryger killed 52-year-old Daravuth Van with an ax as he camped near the First Hill event venue last month.

CHS reported here on Kryger’s arrest after two murders and an assault that left a man in critical condition in Cal Anderson in area attacks that targeted homeless victims sleeping outside in February.

Kryger is charged in one of the deadly attacks. Police have not announced any arrests in the other investigations.

The charging documents for the First Hill murder don’t link the cases but Seattle Police Chief Adrian Diaz has said Kryger was arrested as detectives were on the lookout for a suspect possibly preying on people unhoused when they spotted a man carrying an ax and lost track of him near Freeway Park.

The ax was traced to a nearby Lowe’s home improvement store where SPD gathered images of the purchaser. A department of corrections officer was able to identify the suspect as Kryger and police and SWAT moved to arrest him near his 10th Ave residence.

Prosecutors say the First Hill case also has video evidence clearly linking Kryger to the slaying.

Kryger’s path through the justice system could involve questions of his mental health. Prosecutors say Kryger was previously arrested in 2018 for a violent burglary and stabbing in North Bend that placed him in a treatment program under supervision of the King County Mental Health Court. Kryger failed to attend a scheduled review hearing in late 2019 but managed to steer clear of the law until his arrest this winter.

Mental health competency procedures can take years to play out in the court system. In 2009, CHS reported on the long process that led to restored competency and a guilty plea in the 2007 murder of Capitol Hill resident Shannon Harps.

Kryger remains held on $5 million bail at the King County Jail where he has been held since his March 3rd arrest.

Seattle free to try to crack down on graffiti after appeal in East Precinct chalk protest case

Seattle’s lawless days as a graffiti free for all are over after a federal appeals court ruling in a Capitol Hill free speech case.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has overturned a 2023 ruling that the city’s vandalism laws were unconstitutional in a case over arrests made in 2021 over chalk and charcoal messages scrawled outside Capitol Hill’s East Precinct.

The messages are a frequent and continuing protest method near the 12th and Pine facility and outside Seattle Police Department facilities across the city.

The previous ruling forced the city to back off prosecution for graffiti or tagging while City Attorney Ann Davison’s office appealed the case. Continue reading
