Capitol Hill Pets | A moment with the famous Peaches McFly in Cal Anderson Park

Over the weekend, CHS spotted something white flying through Cal Anderson. We went to investigate and met Peaches McFly, a 19-year-old Goffin’s Cockatoo (Tanimbar corella), with an active social media following. His human, Taryn, says he’s been in the back of a police car and a fire truck. “He flew two blocks away and someone had called the police saying he was lost. They contacted me via his Instagram account and I went and got him out of the back of the police car. He’s a Seattle bird with a small cult following.” Peaches is a free flyer so if you see him soaring about the neighborhood, no worries, he knows where home is.

We ask photographer Alex Garland to follow marchers in the rain and do crazy things like trying to make yet another picture of yet another huge apartment building look interesting. We thought we’d ask him to do something a little more fun. Capitol Hill Pets is a semi-regular look at our furry, fuzzy, feathered, and finned friends found out and about on Capitol Hill.

Capitol Hill Pets | Moose says go to First Caturday in Cal Anderson Park

We met Moose, a massive Siberian cat, as he was lounging around the trees at Cal Anderson Park. His minders, Anneka and Ryanne, have had Moose for about three of his seven months on the planet. He is expected to get even bigger. “He’s second to Maine Coons in terms of size. He loves to hike, kayak, and hangs out in Ryanne’s backpack when we go out” Anneka says. Moose is super friendly, so rub those giant ears when you see him next.

This Saturday, September 1st brings another First Caturday to Cal Anderson. We understand it has become quite the thing. Expect a crowd!

Capitol Hill Pets | Django the hangover dog in Cal Anderson

Django is about five years old and is an American Bulldog/ Staffordshire Terrier. He is originally from the back of a pickup truck in southern Oregon and is about 80 pounds of solid muscle and sweetness. This pup is apparently very lazy, enjoying his Tempur-Pedic mattress and fan this summer. He is also the perfect size to cuddle with, says Dana, his minder. “He’s a perfect hangover dog.”

Capitol Hill Pets | ‘Outdoorsy’ princess Isis in Volunteer Park

CHS found Isis chasing frisbees in Volunteer Park. Isis is an “almost eight”-year-old street dog of Rat Terrier and Chihuahua descent from San Marcos, Texas. She was found and adopted almost seven years ago and once climbed to the summit of the South Sister of the Three Sisters peaks in Oregon. “She’s outdoorsy AND a princess,” we’re told.

Capitol Hill Pets | At Optimism, vive la Franc!

Franc is a three-year-old French Bulldog who has lived with his friend Michelle Dawahare since he was ten weeks old. Franc is great with people, especially kids, and is super easy going. We met him inside Optimism Brewing where he was being especially sweet. Though he is likely in a celebratory mood following the World Cup, Franc has a sensitive stomach, so if you see him, only give him pets.

Capitol Hill Pets | Nala, lion-like, on Broadway

It would seem that the name Nala is popular for any dog in Seattle that is colored — even slightly — like a lion. This two-month-old Pit Bull/Boxer mix was trying out the treats at Mud Bay on Broadway when we stopped in for a visit. A new addition to the family, her personality as a people puppy is already shining through. As she lives in a house with Ebrima and Rahel and a large family, Nala doesn’t sleep much yet, which her humans hope changes soon. Give Nala a pet if you catch her on the street. Roarrrr!

Capitol Hill Pets | Admiring Donna’s eyelashes on 15th Ave

Emmett Montgomery is well known in Seattle — if not for his jokes, then for his presence. It’s not a rare sight to see Emmett, big and bearded, walking Donna, tiny and trembling, around 15th Ave. Donna Noble Montgomery is a 12-year-old Chihuahua with what Emmett calls the “most beautiful eyelashes I have ever seen.”

“I have never noticed anybody’s eyelashes until I noticed Donna’s and now I see eyelashes, they’re just not as beautiful as Donna’s,” Montgomery said. If you see Emmett and Donna, admire their eyelashes and say hello.

Capitol Hill Pets | Alice completing her circle in Cal Anderson

CHS met Indira (human) who was watching Alice (canine) for her friend Tess (human). Alice is a 3-month-old “mostly or completely Pomeranian.” Indira tells us it took a while to get to the park. “We were walking her down here and she can’t walk straight apparently,” she (human) said. “She’ll scuttle sideways and realize she’s sideways and walk in a big circle and start all over again.” We (human) highly recommend a walking friend like Alice.

Capitol Hill Pets | Huxley — sitting — on E Madison

We met Jen and Huxley out for a walk on E Madison. Huxley is a big ol’ Bernese Mountain Dog who spends a lot of time at a shop in Fall City where they make tree houses. We did not make that last part up. But for a dog who spends so much time around tree houses, Huxley would prefer — very much — to be on the ground. “If you sit on the ground, he will sit on your lap,” Jen tells CHS about her 125-pound sitting companion. “Even when you are on the ground trying to do other stuff…” Continue reading

Capitol Hill Pets | Indiana Jones in his cat pack

Indiana Jones goes by Indy and was rescued via Paws Cat City by Tyler. A 3-year-old “deaf cat that nobody wanted,” he loves going outside but can’t go on his own. “He’s pretty terrible instinct wise, so we got this cat pack for him so we can take him out and have him see the sights,” Tyler said. “He loves it.” Having just moved to the Hill from Fremont, this was Indy’s first time out in this part of the city.
