As Voodoo arrives on Capitol Hill, Seattle’s Mighty-O Donuts faces bankruptcy — UPDATE

As a doughnut invader from the south prepares its sweet assault on the city with a Capitol Hill beachhead, a veteran of Seattle’s fried dough scene is financially struggling.

Federal court documents show Mighty-O Donuts filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in July in a case where the filings continue over the more than $1 million in liabilities the small Seattle company carries.

CHS has asked the company for more information about its future and its employees after the filing that came as Might-O founder Ryan Kellner saw profits at his four cafes and production facility dip to near zero this summer.

In its filing, the company blames the pandemic and national economic issues for its troubles saying “a combination of factors, including the adverse effects of the pandemic, increased costs due to inflation, decreased sales, and high fixed lease costs” led to the bankruptcy.

“Mighty-O experienced modest growth for many years until the COVID-19 pandemic in
2020,” one document reads. “The pandemic severely impacted Mighty-O’s ability to operate a financially sound business. The company experienced a significant drop in customer traffic and a decrease in employee availability, preventing it from operating at full capacity. Additionally, Mighty-O faced major disruptions in supply chains, vendor services, and rising costs due to inflation.” Continue reading

Capitol Hill’s 24-hour Voodoo Doughnuts set to finally open next week

(Image: Voodoo Doughnuts)

Days and nights of nonstop doughnuts at the base of Capitol Hill just above downtown Seattle will begin next week. The Capitol Hill Voodoo Doughnuts has announced an opening date.

Word was already spreading from people interviewing for jobs at the new shop of a planned December 10th debut. The Portland-based company made things official Tuesday afternoon:

Join us on 12/10 at 8AM for the grand opening of our Seattle store! 🍩🎉

Voodoo says 20% of the first day’s sales will go to support the FareStart nonprofit. There will also be an “exclusive gift” for the first 50 people in line.

UPDATE: As pointed out in the comments, the “grand opening” is planned for Tuesday — watch for a soft opening for locals (and a few thousands more people from social media) over the weekend.

You can probably expect those lines to continue. In addition to the anticipation for the popular chain finally coming to Seattle, the 24×7 hours are likely to make the doughnut shop a round-the-clock destination.

The opening has been long delayed. Voodoo had been planning for a spring opening for the much anticipated chain. Continue reading

2024: The year of breakfast at Dingfelder’s Jewish Delicatessen

Thanks to Tammy Jo for the report and pictures

You have to admire the slow path Dingfelder’s Jewish Delicatessen is climbing on Capitol Hill.

Dingfelder’s opened as a walk-up at 14th and Pine in 2018. In the beginning, you couldn’t sit down. The interior wasn’t open to customers until months later and they didn’t have a website.

2019 brought a wonder of modern convenience: indoor seating at the deli.

2020 brought bagels.

Now, 2024 brings breakfast at Dingfelder’s. Here’s longtime friend of the site Tammy Jo reporting in the CHS Facebook Group:

DINGFELDER’S DELICATESSAN is finally serving Deli Breakfast!! They are open 7am-7pm Sun-Thurs // 7am-9pm Fri-Sat 1318 E Pine The Kaiser Roll is New York good. A true egg & cheese on Kaiser is available 7 days a week on Capitol Hill. Also cookies & pickles. YUM.

General Porpoise wants you to have your Capitol Hill-given right to sparkling wine and doughnuts for breakfast

(Image: General Porpoise)

A doughnut in one hand, a glass of sparkling wine in the other — Capitol Hill-born General Porpoise is adding a liquor license with plans to sell beer and wine.

The Sea Creatures family of businesses behind the E Union filled-doughnut shop and its sister locations across Seattle appear to have a more sophisticated version of a Homer Simpson fantasy in mind.

“Doughnuts and sparkling wine, or even doughnuts and mimosas, is for sure a thing,” a representative replied to CHS’s inquiry about the possibility of making a breakfast of doughnuts and beer.

Apparently, General Porpoise was originally licensed so it could include champagne with its sweet offerings when it debuted on Capitol Hill in 2015 but the state yanked the permit — “too small a menu,” the rep said.

But rules have changed and so has General Porpoise. In addition to the plans to add alcohol, the shops are adding quiche and sandwiches.

You can find General Porpoise Capitol Hill at 1020 E Union. Learn more at gpdoughnuts.com.

The golden age of Capitol Hill bagels

The Bagel Deli may be long gone but you are living in the gold age of Capitol Hill bagels.

The October opening of Rubinstein Bagels brought a nice little burst of new energy to 15th Ave E’s commercial offerings while also elevating the neighborhood’s chewy bagel offerings to a new epic level. Here are a few scenes CHS captured on a recent visit to check out the new shop.

Capitol Hill currently is home to five outstanding bagel bakers each offering its own special take on the Jewish baked goods: Continue reading
