Walk in the Shoes at HRS: Learning Disabilities Simulation

Have you ever struggled in school or wondered what it would be like not to succeed because of the way you learn? Have you wondered what a school day is like for a student with a language-related disability?

As part of October as Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, Hamlin Robinson School is leading a program that  simulates the experiences a dyslexic child faces in a typical classroom. Experience this simulation of life with dyslexia and understand its impact on the learning process. A series of exercises will lend insight into the auditory, visual and kinesthetic challenges of dyslexia.

This event is intended for adults and older children.

HRS Principal a ‘Human Hamster’ at Upcoming Sounders Game

Hamlin Robinson School Head of School Joan Beauregard has been selected to be a ‘human hamster’ at the Seattle Sounders v. Portland Timbers game on Sunday, October 7th at Century Link Field. Selected in a drawing for the Washington Federation of Independent Schools ‘Principals on the Pitch‘ event, Joan and another Head of School (St. Catherine’s School) will go head-to-head in giant inflatable clear plastic spheres and maneuver around an obstacle course on the soccer field during the half-time show.

The special and friendly competition is sponsored by PEMCO Insurance and organized by the Washington Federation of Independent Schools. For participating in this event, PEMCO will provide HRS with an appearance from a Seattle Sounder player. He will speak with students, sign autographs, and even host a mini-soccer clinic. In addition, both schools will receive a donation from PEMCO insurance, which HRS will use for financial aid.

No Principals will be harmed in the making of this competition.

HRS Art Teacher Receives Leadership Award

Hamlin Robinson School art teacher, Allison Echanove, deserves to take a step out of the art room and into the spotlight! She has been recognized with the Annual Leadership Award from Artsonia, the world’s largest online kid’s art museum, for outstanding ladership in the area of Arts Education at HRS. The HRS online gallery ranks 7th in Washington State.

The Leadership Award presented to Allison honors teachers who go beyond the classroom walls to encourage family and community involvement in arts education. The award also recognizes significant achievement in the area of technology integration within the school arts program.

While teachers in more than 100 countries showcase their student artwork on Artsonia, Allison has created a school community deserving recognition. During the 2011-13 school year, HRS school gallery showcased 651 pieces of artwork. This popular collection of art has been visited more than 20,000 times and has received nearly 100 comments from friends and family. “Artsonia is a simple, yet effective, way to get parents and family members more involved in Art Education,” said Allison, “and my students love it!

In addition, family members can purchase keepsakes imprinted with the child’s artwork, with Artsonia donating 20 percent of their annual product revenue back to the school art program.

Miss Representation Screening at Hamlin Robinson School

Hamlin Robinson School is pleased to partner with Seattle Girls’ School and Lake Washington Girls Middle School to present Miss RepresentationThis film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. The film challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.

Stories from teenage girls and provocative interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics, like Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem build momentum as Miss Representation accumulates startling facts and statistics that will leave the audience shaken and armed with a new perspective.

HRS Learning Center Wins Best of Washington Award

Nominated by the community of peers, Central District’s Hamlin Robinson School Learning Center was selected as the recipient of the 2012 Best of Washington Innovative Program Award by the Washington Federation of Independent Schools. The HRS Learning Center programs impacts the entire community and serves students from variety of public and independent schools. This new and innovative program leverages the strengths and transformational qualities of HRS for the benefit of, not only our students, but students and teachers in a variety of schools. The Learning Center has monthly parent educational lectures, professional development opportunities and now tutoring, screening and testing. This ambitious program offers an array of language related services and collaborative opportunities.

The HRS Learning Center programs will benefit over 1,000 students and professionals this year alone. Over the two-week winter vacation the school has nearly finished setting up the Learning Center teaching facility. Dane Jensen, HRS Trustee and advocate, has coordinated this effort. The Center features a lab group classroom, six tutoring stations, a conference room and a large event and presentation space. The Learning Center has been made possible by generous support from Wright Runstad & CompanyDane F. Dyslexic Advantage Book Presentation at HRS Wed, Nov 30

Come and hear a special presentation and attend a book signing with the authors of the acclaimed book, The Dyslexic Advantage, Brock L. Eide, M.D., M.A., and Fernette Eide M.D. The event will take place this Wednesday, Nov 30 at 6:30pm at Hamlin Robinson School, an independent school on Capitol Hill dedicated to meeting the educational, social, and emotional needs specific to students with dyslexia and related language difficulties.

In this paradigm-shifting book, the authors describe an exciting new brain science that reveals that people with dyslexia have unique brain structure and organization. While the differences are responsible for certain challenges with literacy and reading, the dyslexic brain also gives a predisposition to important skills, and special talents.

With advice for parents, educators, and dyslexics, The Dyslexic Advantage provides the first complete portrait of dyslexia. Supporting their claims with groundbreaking science and interviews with successful dyslexics and innovative teachers, the authors of this essential book show how the unique strengths of dyslexia can be captured for success at home, at school, and at work.
