Voters are set to approve the renewal of a longtime property levy that pays for King Countyโs $23 million a year Regional Automated Fingerprint Identification System.
Tuesday night’s first tally in the April special election shows nearly 60% of ballots approving the renewal.
Proposition 1 renews a longtime property levy that pays for the fingerprint and identification system that has been in place since 1986 and helped law enforcement agencies solve crimes through information and technology sharing.
The current voter-approved levy was set at 2.9 cents per $1,000 in assessed value, meaning the average home valued at $845,000 paid $24.50. The new proposal calls for the levy to be renewed at 2.8 cents per $1,000 in assessed value.
The $23 million-a-year program serves all 39 cities and unincorporated areas in King County.
The levy tends to be one of the closer votes in the county’s roster of recurring property tax renewals. In 2018, voters approved the proposition with 55% of the vote. That vote came as part of that year’s August primary.
The renewal question was presented to King County voters in a different fashion in 2025, appearing as the only item on a “single bubble” special election ballot.
County voters are slated to weigh in on another tax renewal this August. The $1.4 billion county parks levy renewal will appear on the summer primary ballot along with the race to choose the county’s next executive.
