With the end of March, the Century Ballroom is closing but the dancing above E Pine and 10th Ave is still going strong.
The Reverie Ballroom is preparing for the next dance and keeping the Capitol Hill venue in motion.
This week, CHS swung into the Century as owner Hallie Kuperman marked another in what has been a year of final nights.
“I am djing the last Wednesday Swing dance that Century Ballroom will host,” Kuperman wrote about the evening. “It’s where we started (and I started) and where we’ll end this night.”
CHS reported in January on the plans for Kuperman and Alison Cockrill to wind down the Century after 28 years of swing dance, waltz, salsa and more and hand the space over to a group led by Seattle event producer Eliza Wilder to negotiate a new lease for the building’s Grand Ballroom and West Hall.
The plans for the new Reverie Ballroom are now moving forward with hopes of continuing to fill the second floor of the 117-year-old Odd Fellows Building with dances and classes while expanding the business with a stronger focus on events and rentals.
The transition from Century to Reverie is underway. The venue will be closed for a rare Saturday this weekend for a staff party, Kuperman says. The class calendar looks busy for April but some more downtime is likely. City permits indicate some demolition and changes are planned.
Sibling bar and restaurant the Tin Table will continue to operate until May when the space is being taken over by a new project from bar manager Sander Raav. We’ll learn more about The Broken Shaker soon, hopefully.
The group behind Reverie, meanwhile, has raised nearly $17,000 in community support for the effort and is seeking investors.
