A planned Presidents’ Day demonstration in Cal Anderson Park will be joined by more protests in Seattle Monday including a planned rally outside the downtown Federal Building protesting the Trump administration’s wave of firings of government employees.
Organizers are calling on demonstrators to gather in the Capitol Hill park through the day Monday beginning around noon as part of the nationwide “50501” — 50 protests in 50 states on one day — effort.
It is unclear how many will attend the Seattle demonstrations. Protests in the city and on Capitol Hill have so far drawn smaller crowds than the strong backlash the grew in response to the start of the first Trump administration nine years ago. With a central location and proximity to downtown plus strong public transit, Cal Anderson has remained a center of activity.
CHS reported here on demonstration activities that have taken place in the popular park including dozens who marched from the park in late January. Organizers of that demonstration have promised it was a warm-up to a larger protest planned for the park on March 15th in a post encouraging demonstrators to march βfor our reproductive rights,β healthcare, trans rights, and βto bring awareness to the housing crisis.β
Earlier this month, the Seattle City Council approved legislation setting new rules for how the Seattle Police Department can use crowd control weapons including pepper spray, blast balls, and tear gas.
Fallout from SPDβs crowd control responses during protests has been costly. Last year, a group of 50 plaintiffs harmed by the police response to 2020 Black Lives Matter and CHOP protests including people injured by blast balls won a $10 million settlement with the city. Meanwhile, residents and workers in the area suffered that summer as SPD tear gas swirled through the neighborhood and into nearby businesses and apartments.

Each worthy topics, but this “all the above” approach to protest is just a cacaphony. You need to capture voters with a clear message on a clear theme. Until then, it’s just “hooray for our side.”
They’re just bored and this is their hobby.
They got bored before the election and bashed the democrats and we got Trump.
Right, can’t blame yourself and the 71 or so million people that voted for Trump after he ran on a campaign of doing exactly what he’s doing.
Usually you have to wait for the incumbent party to get voted out of office before you can blame the opposition, but not a stable genius like yourself!
I have no idea what you are even talking about.
Seattle Left (Before Election): Republicans and Democrats are the same.
Seattle Left (After Election): Oh no!
Just be consistent.
Ditto
C-
Itβs a little more complicated than that. But hey you hear Seattle is getting a Republican mayor. I might vote for her!
I’m heading over now! Show up!
Don’t let the Proud Boys win!!
Lol
I want to start a new party.
I am calling it…
THE ROBINHOOD PARTY
The nest with 2 robin eggs emoji is the symbol.
Funny – There are maybe 30 people at the rally – Looked like a fail
Preach to the choir. No one will disagree.
Letβs burn down our city to commemorate our poor decisions!
My sister and I were horrified to show up at Cal Anderson and see it empty. Who THE F put that together? Was that some dumbass Nihilistβs joke??
We then went instead to our originally planned location, downtown at the Henry Jackson Fed building. There I broke down in joy and relief to see and join at least 1,500 others who are also NOT OKAY with THE DYSTOPIAN FASCIST APOCALYPSE we are all being forced to live with.
I am still not okay, and none of you should be, either.
