A 15-month construction project has finally wrapped up as the city’s parks department has tackled “60 documented barriers to accessibility” around the Montlake Community Center.

The facility has finally reopened after the $1.7 million construction project that started in November 2023.

Work included adding accessible parking stalls at the west entrance and making accessibility improvements to pathways, ramp, and entrance from the parking area to the community center, and interior improvements to remove barriers to accessibility in the restrooms, multi-purpose rooms, and kitchen.

The community center, Tudor building, basketball court, baseball field (adjacent walkways and seating area), and parking lot were closed for the long project with Seattle Parks arranging access to the play area and tennis courts earlier in the process.

The community center at 1618 E Calhoun is planning an open house celebrating the reopening on March 14th.

The work is part of a wave of construction around Montlake including the recent completion of the Montlake Lid across 520. Next fall, the expanded and overhauled Montlake Elementary School campus is expected to welcome back students. Meanwhile, work began late last year on the seven year, $1.4 billion Portage Bay Bridge and Roanoke Lid projects.
