  • 18th Ave E gunfire arrest: Seattle’s bout of February snow helped Seattle Police track down the suspect in an overnight 18th Ave E gunfire incident last week. SPD says the suspect’s footprints on the snowy street led officers to the man after residents reported gunfire near Stevens Elementary School early on the morning of Thursday, February 6th. According to police, gunshots were reported in the area of 18th Ave E just after 4:30 AM. SPD says arriving officers found multiple bullet holes in a vehicle — and footprints in the snow. Officers were able to track down the suspect a couple of blocks away and take him into custody without incident. Police also recovered a handgun. The 32-year-old was booked into King County Jail for investigation of aiming or discharging firearms, and reckless endangerment. Police say witness provided video “confirming the shooting, including a visible muzzle flash and the suspect’s voice, which was distinguishable as he was heard yelling.” There were no reported injuries.
  • Powell Barnett Park suspicious object incident: Seattle Police taped off the Central District’s Powell Barnett Park Tuesday night over concerns about a “suspicious tennis ball size object” found near an encampment. SPD says officers were called to the area near E Jefferson and MLK Way around 4 PM. “Officers closed the park and placed tape around the outer part of the park to prevent citizens from entering,” SPD says. The department’s Arson and Bomb Squad was called to the scene where investigators examined the object, “made it safe” and removed it. There were no reported injuries and no arrests.
  • 23rd/Madison armed robbery: Seattle Police investigated a reported armed robbery at 23rd and Madison early Tuesday morning. According to East Precinct radio updates on the 12:45 AM incident, the victim was able to wave down police only seconds after the street hold-up. Police searched the area but had limited suspect information to go on. There were no reported injuries and no arrests.
  • Concern over man down on frozen sidewalk: More than a dozen 911 callers reported a man down and possibly unconscious on a Capitol Hill sidewalk along 19th Ave E on Thursday’s icy morning with temperatures in the 20s but Seattle Police say the subject declined services in multiple contacts through the day. A 911 caller tells CHS that dispatchers were informing citizen reporting concerned about the man that the department was aware of the situation and had been out to contact the man multiple times and that he was not injured and declined services. The man remained on the sidewalk at the street corner through the day, according to the caller. The bout of below freezing temperatures have been dangerous for people living unsheltered but there have been no deaths due to exposure reported so far this month, according to a review of reports from the King County Medical Examiner. Information from the King County Regional Homelessness Authority on severe weather services and shelter is posted here.

The zombie apocalypse continues. Heartbreaking for those (sans guns) experiencing this. And equally so as our neighborhoods decline. Hey Joy! Maybe start with cleaning up the shitmess on Broadway.

Are our first responders really only able to “make multiple contacts throughout the day” when there’s a person just sitting on a corner in freezing weather? In NYC they’re empowered to force people into warming shelters to prevent deaths from exposure…granted it can be colder there than it is here (usually) but that seems like a tool we should consider too…
