Enough of closures and looking back. Here is something new — though its inspiration is steeped in the past.
The Piedmont Cafe is now open on First Hill as part of an overhaul of the historic building now known as the Tuscany Apartments.
The Seneca Street site was once the Piedmont Apartment Hotel, “with exuberant colored tile and elegant ornament” from one of Seattle’s most prominent architects, the city’s entry on the historically significant structure reads.
The new Piedmont Cafe and owner Charles Scott have transformed the space that was once the grand lobby of the old apartments with daily morning to 3 PM cafe service featuring Caffe Vita beans and Macrina baked goods.
“From its origins as a gathering space for travelers and locals alike, this storied location has been reimagined into a vibrant cafΓ© that pays homage to its past while embracing the present,” the cafe’s owner says.
Piedmont Cafe is located at 1215 Seneca. Learn more at piedmontseattle.com.

love it, nice to have something in that space
Itβs really cute. Glad to see more biz not just in the area but especially First Hill.
I recall this building from the early 80s as The Evangeline, a building for women run by the Salvation Army. It was one of the few opportunities at the time for affordable housing for women who did not have the financial or mental wherewithal for an ordinary apartment or room. It was run-down by then, and a few years later they sold it and it was rehabbed and went upmarket. Marginal housing for poor women, gone. These large old buildings become very expensive to maintain, and impossible if they are not bringing in market rent or a subsidy. The Evangeline had neither. https://www.historylink.org/File/10233
woooow!
That is an amazing place. Whomever designed it nailed it.
All the rightoids love complaining about things closing but restaurants are opening at same rate… lol
You are truly the most annoying person that constantly comments on here.
Yeah, I guess if youβre upset about a business closing in your neighborhood, youβre a right winger. Gotta love Seattle!
It’s not that. It’s the fact that more opened than closed last year. Yet MAGA light still dramatizes it.
Hey, I thought I was.
Side note: this isn’t a restaurant. It’s a cafe that sells good coffee and pastries for premium pricing. Counter service cafe is not the same as a restaurant.
Oh, I didnβt realize it was only right wingers who cared about culture. Thank you for schooling me, oh wise one.
I gotta agree with John on this one. Please stop commenting, your posts are idiotic.
I disagree. I donβt like most of your comments but I would never tell you to shut up because I think we all grow stronger by confronting ideas and approaches we donβt agree with. Keep throwing it out there you contrarian left wing agitator.
I’m happy to entertain ideas that are different from my own when they are cogent.
Amusing to know that you’ve been lurking, waiting for me to comment so that you could get your burn in. I’ve posted under 10 times so I’ll have to go back and re-read them and try to figure out which one got under your skin. I think with the breadcrumb of “contrarian left wing agitator” I should be able to figure it out – thanks, Glenn!
Very cool place. Tried it today and will definitely be back. So nice to be in that grand lobby space with original fixtures and neighborhood vibes
It’s lovely there. So nice to have a spot like this in the neighborhood!
