Sunday evening will bring “a conversation on intergenerational play” in a community meeting about a parkour park planned to be part of the Garfield Super Block project.
The December 8th, 6 PM session at the Central District’s nearby Metier Brewing will include a panel discussion including parkour practitioners, coaches, and community representatives about the “history of the practice and its importance in Seattle.”
The parkour park element would be the first in the city.
CHS reported here on District 3 representative Joy Hollingsworth’s successful 2025 budget priorities including a $775,000 increase in Seattle Parks funding to support capital costs and community staffing costs for the Garfield Super Block Park Project,
The $8.4 million Super Block plan is hoped to reimagine the area around Garfield High School and the community center to create a Legacy and Promise Promenade and new community spaces including the parkour park. A water play feature considered for the project has been cut from the planning.
The Garfield Super Block would add new public art, renovate the area, add new play areas, and create a new promenade for this core of the Central District.
Planned parkour park features would be a first for the city — though First Hill’s Freeway Park is considered to be one of the top destinations for the sport in the country.
Seattle Parks said the Garfield Super Block had reached a “60%” design milestone earlier this year. Construction had been hoped to begin by summer but is now listed for a 2025 start by the city.
