Closure of Broadway Great Clips a reminder of big hair’s exit from Capitol Hill

This guy has been posting photos with his Broadway Great Clips Yelp reviews over the years and we hope they are never deleted

While CHS is reporting on the growth of the new 028 Barber School on Capitol Hill, we should note the passing of a longtime part of the neighborhood’s haircutting options.

The Broadway Great Clips shut down earlier this month bringing to a close what the franchising ownership said was nearly 30 years of business in the neighborhood.

A CHS reader brought the closure to our attention:

I went to get a haircut at the Harvard Market Great Clips on Sunday and it’s totally cleared out. There’s a typed sign in the window thanking people for 27 years(!) in the neighborhood.

I know it’s a chain, but it was one of the very few places in Capitol Hill to receive a cheap haircut. Also, every stylist I ever had there was an immigrant, so it was a business that provided vital employment.

The reader says that at least one of the location’s stylists is now working out of Mosaic Salon, a “spa and studios” beauty concept that came to Capitol Hill in 2021 and provides suites for independent stylists in a transformed space previously home to Urban Outfitters.

The Great Clips exit is another reminder of the exit of big chain hair from the Hill and the industry’s glory days including the E Olive Way Supercuts.

The closure is part of ongoing change at the Harvard Market shopping center. CHS reported here in September as the local ownership group has put the Harvard Market property up for sale for $25 million amid ongoing public safety concerns in the area.

The ownership is working with the city on a deal that might bring a unique tenant to another empty Harvard Market space. The city says it is planning a Community Assisted Response and Engagement (CARE) station on the street level of the Harvard Market shopping center in a space left empty when Chase Bank departed the challenged corner.

I’m sorry to lose them. Another low-priced business gone, and another empty storefront for the junkies to do drugs in.

There is more money to be made in drugs than haircuts.
