Capitol Hill’s new Voodoo Doughnuts is not, as previously reported, a 24-hour doughnut shop.
It closes every morning at 3 AM to clean, bake, shower, shave, and start again.
Here is a look inside the newly opened “21-hour” doughnut shop at the base of Capitol Hill — a visit CHS made late at night in celebration of what might be the new addition’s greatest gift to the neighborhood.
Voodoo joins a strong community of Capitol Hill doughnut makers. Ubiquitous Seattle doughnut presence Top Pot was born on Capitol Hill and celebrated 20 years at its Summit cafe in 2022. Mighty-O filled in the vegan category with its Capitol Hill store at 12th and Madison in 2015 where it is regaining its footing after filing for bankruptcy protection this summer. For glossy vegan options, visit upper E Pike small chain Dough Joy debuted in 2022. For upscale, filled-doughnuts, there is General Porpoise’s first shop which opened on E Union in 2015. For craft doughnuts, head to 23rd and Union where Raised Doughnuts moved into a lovely new space in the new Midtown Square development in 2022. There are also lots of smaller options like the surprise Polish paczki at First Hill’s George’s Delicatessen which marked 45 years of business on Madison last year. And the circle comes round on E Pine where Top Pot co-founder Michael Klebeck got back to his small-batch roots with Half and Half Doughnut Co. in October 2019.
CHS reported here earlier this month on the announcement the much anticipated Voodoo’s first expansion to Seattle would finally be opening. CHS first reported on the arrival of Seattle’s first ever Voodoo in October 2023 after construction permits revealed details of the new Capitol Hill shop in the Booker Building at the corner of Pine and Minor next to Melrose Market. Delays included construction work to address some of the 1912-era building’s quirks.
Now Voodoo’s sugar coated quirks are part of the neighborhood’s breakfast — and nightlife.
Nocturnal treats on Capitol Hill might be a theme of 2025. CHS reported here on the plans for a new Insomnia Cookies being lined up in Pride Place, Broadway’s affordable, LGBTQIA-friendly senior community development neighboring the block’s classic gay nightclub Neighbours.
Voodoo Doughnuts is now open at 1201 Pine. Learn more at voodoodoughnut.com.

110% overrated and over priced
At the risk of being pilloried by the non-donut eating saints that populate this comment thread and those who don’t understand how rental economics work, their buttermilk bar is one of the best I’ve had.
Buttermilk bars used to be even better, lol, pre palm oil scandal.. but that was so early on.. that & the using drum stix to turn bacon then using those same stix to flip the vegan dugnuts -Good Times
Much adoo about nothing.
