The next keeper of the flame for the spirit of the old Broadway Grill will do it with margaritas and tacos.
A new Paradise restaurant project is quickly taking shape in the space.
The coming opening will be the latest addition to a sprawling community of Mexican and Latin American joints around Capitol HIll and the Central District that may have lost a few of its most prominent members recently but still tallies nearly 20 venues.
For Broadway, the new project is a sign of continued demand for commercial space even as other food and drink projects come and go.
CHS reported here last month as the Olmstead diner held a going out of business garage sale as it shuttered after overhauling the old Broadway Grill and five years of business on the street.
The Paradise project will put that overhaul to use and is readying to join Broadway from the experienced ownership behind Rainier Ave’s La Herradura and its “Tacos, Burritos, Botanas, and more” approach that also includes daytime hours and breakfast.
La Herradura has built its reputation on “tradicionales” and big platters of straightforward offerings like tacos and burritos but Paradise will be an opportunity to stretch out and add beer and margaritas to its offerings. We’ll know soon how exactly that recipe comes together.
When it opens, the new Broadway restaurant will be something like the 17th Mexican restaurant across Capitol Hill. That number counts the recent closure of the Mezcaleria Oaxaca complex on E Pine, and the August shuttering of Barrio on 12th Ave.
A new generation is already taking shape. On 15th Ave E, another hallowed place in Capitol Hill food and drink is getting ready to take on new dimensions as the old Coastal Kitchen will become the new home for an expansion of the Fire Tacos & Cantina restaurant family.
Meanwhile, recent breaks in the Broadway food and drink foundation are being repaired. The Chandelier Lounge is now lighting up one recently vacated space while Capitale Pizzeria is getting ready to add its global take on pizza to Broadway in another. Fuel’s decision to pull the plug on its tour of duty in the old Vivace coffee bar walk-up leaves one blank space and new opportunity.
Paradise will open soon at 314 E Broadway.
