Police search for man shot in hand, possible self-defense shooter in reported Broadway robbery — UPDATE

Police were searching for the shooter and a suspect shot in the hand in a reported street robbery Sunday afternoon near Broadway and Pine.

Multiple 911 callers reported gunfire and a man seen with a gun in the incident just before 1:45 PM Sunday on the west side of Broadway south of Broadway and Pine near the Walgreens.

One person was reported shot in the hand but police could not immediately locate any victims.

Witnesses described a possible street robbery involving multiple people and the victim reportedly opening fire on his assailant before fleeing the area on an electric scooter, according to East Precinct radio updates.

Police were searching for the suspect last reported headed west on Union.

UPDATE: SPD says the shooting came during an attempted robbery when a man tried to grab cash from a shopper inside the Walgreens:

On scene investigation found that victim was holding cash and standing at the checkout counter when suspect took the cash and ran from the store. Victim followed and ordered a female acquaintance to retrieve his firearm, presumably from a nearby vehicle. An altercation between the victim and suspect ensued outside of the store, during which the victim was shot in the left hand.

SPD says officers located one 9mm pistol casing and blood outside the store.

Police say the suspect was seen bandaging himself before fleeing west on a Lime scooter.

There were no immediate arrests. SPD was unable to immediately locate the injured suspect.

The shooting comes as the area around Broadway, Pike, and Pine has been identified by SPD as a center for street disorder and drug-related crimes and the blocks will be at the core of the newly established Capitol Hill “Stay out of Drug Area” exclusion zone that can be used by law enforcement and the courts to bar people convicted of drug related crimes from the streets.

The area is also facing significant change with the longtime developers holding Pike and Broadway’s Harvard Market shopping center putting the property up for sale for a reported $25 million.

Street disorder is putting that area lightly. That block from QFC to Walgreens is so sketch. It’s always been gritty but now we have broad daylight gunfire. Insert “this is fine” meme here.

Was walking to get some groceries and beer around 3:30 down Broadway right after this happened (I guess, didn’t know it at the time). Block felt especially shady and filled with users and dealers. Guy outside QFC was telling his buddy how he was walking to work and saw it go down, said a guy just ran up on the other guy and shot him. I guess it must have been a crap shot if he managed to walk away with just a hand wound.

There’s a bunch of fairly fancy new community housing right on this corner. Maybe they should try and post a cop up once and awhile, clean it up a bit.

Pride Place recently opened and that’s for GLBTQ who are 55+. If this craps continues, I wouldn’t be surprised if they will be the loudest group to voice their concerns.

I think you are idealizing a people who are equally capable of attracting unsavory pedestrians to the neighborhood. LGBTQIA+ people tend to be single in our elderly years… and for some that’s not a desired out come… and loneliness can tend to cause poor judgment. It’s just something that I have observed… also the “L” GOES FIRST! Lesbians are already a minority for visibility in the community.

I live at Pride Place and we’ve been pretty damn loud voicing our concerns. We had a visit from Councilmember Joy Hollingsworth to listen to our specific concerns. And also the building management has been reaching out to SPD. It’s a process and all part of living right in the middle of an urban area, but I feel hopeful that things will improve… it takes time though. :-)

Thanks for making your concerns known and heard. No one wants to see a return of a Broadway from the mid 90s.

More well regulated militias, less firearm owning consumers. Ban guns.
