A community fundraiser is underway to help loved ones of Kenji Spurgeon pay for funeral expenses and return the 23-year-old’s body to family in Alabama.
“Kenji was a bright light in our lives, known for an infectious smile and quick wit,” a remembrance reads. “Kenji had an extraordinary ability to uplift everyone around with laughter, a joke, a song, or a dance. Kenji inspired us all to seek joy and be cheerleaders for one another.”
CHS reported here on the investigation of the early July 1st shooting that left Spurgeon shot to death in the E Pine parking lot behind Teto’s Cantina across from Cal Anderson Park.
In the fundraiser effort, Spurgeon is remembered as a part of the first class to attend Summit Sierra High School, a small, 235-student, college-prep public high school in the International District.
“From the very beginning, Kenji stood out, capturing the hearts of teachers and classmates. During Kenji’s first week of school, Kenji was interviewed by reporters about the importance of school choice and radiated confidence,” the remembrance reads. “As Kenji grew, Kenji continued to be a passionate speaker and advocate. At 23, Kenji was building an independent life and becoming the person Kenji aspired to be.”
There have been no arrests announced in the case.
Police said they were trying to learn what lead up to the shooting and called on the public for assistance in the investigation. Anybody with information is asked to call the SPD Violent Crimes Tip Line at (206) 233-5000.

This is tragic. God bless her soul. Crickets here, it’s almost like nobody cares. Disgusting. But some leftwing poser just scribbled, “black liberation” on a 14th AVE E traffic circle.
Why is that a problem? Right wing is going to fix this is your claim? wtf…
Yeah it is crickets! Not even the local black girls are talking about it. Not one Queen at any of the bars have spoke up or said anything. And I’m sure they know something.
