Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name is synonymous with dumplings and noodles. Prolific Seattle-area restaurateur Sen Mao is coming to Capitol Hill with the new Cheers! Hong Kong.
Posters showing an assortment of Fragrant Harbour delights including cocktails, bubble tea, and beer as well as the aforementioned dumplings and noodles have gone up in the windows of the former Lionhead on the northern reaches of Broadway.
CHS reported in May on the “closed until further notice” status of the Sichuan peppercorn-flavored Lionhead as its ownership sought a buyer for the 2,000-square-foot “Turnkey Capitol Hill Restaurant/Bar.” Legendary Broadway chef Jerry Traunfeld opened Lionhead in 2015 next door to his popular Poppy restaurant before spinning it off to new owners when he retired in 2019. Garrett Doherty and Benjamin Chew can now fully move on to new projects as they put their Broadway investment behind them.
There is no word on the details of the transaction but Mao is an experienced owner behind the Seattle and Kirkland locations of Dumpling the Noodle as well as other projects like Aurora dry hot pot joint Fun DJ. Mao also likely won’t be caught surprised by some of the challenges of doing business in the city. His Wallingford location suffered a costly break-in this spring.
The quick turnover to Cheers is part of a ripple of food and drink investment centered around Broadway this summer. CHS reported last week on Capitale Pizzeria, a pizza cousin to Belltown’s La Fontana Siciliana, coming to the former Boca bakery spot that was once a home to the Broadway Pagliacci. CHS also reported here on plans for the Chandelier Lounge to join the Broadway bar scene soon in the former Boca Restobar and Grill space. Another Broadway merger and acquisition went down across the street where Corvus and Co. now has new owners.
As for Cheers, you’ll have to stay tuned. The posters have pictures of promising offerings but say only “Coming soon…” as far as the new venture’s opening date is concerned.
