There were no reported injuries after gunfire in a reported drive-by shooting north of the Central District’s Powell Barnett Park as crowds gathered for the sunny evening and Juneteenth celebrations fled and sought shelter.
According to witness and East Precinct radio reports, gunfire was reported on the north end of the park around 5:30 PM. Multiple callers reported at least five shots and at least one vehicle speeding from the scene.
Arriving officers found no victims but reported at least one vehicle was hit near 28th and Jefferson. Police had the area north of the park closed with crime scene tape.
Police were looking for the reported suspect vehicle but were not immediately successful.
There were no reported arrests.
Thousands of people were in the area Wednesday enjoying multiple Juneteenth events including a large festival at Jimi Hendrix Park.
Police have ramped up their presence in the area around nearby Garfield High School following a deadly shooting earlier this month in the school’s parking lot that left a 17-year-old student dead.
