Juneteenth celebrations this year in the Central District will include one of the week’s biggest events in Seattle at Jimi Hendrix Park. The celebrations marking the holiday have been underway including Sunday’s Revival Juneteenth Pop-up Market at the Midtown Square development at 23rd and Union.
Organizer Donna Moodie of the Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle says Sunday’s market grew out of efforts reviving small businesses after the pandemic.
“It’s amazing to me. Probably one of my favorite things that we do,” Moodie said.
“We love this. We want it to be bigger.”
In addition to giving the artists and small businesses who took part in Sunday’s market connections to customers and the community, Moodie says the Urban League’s Revival events including BIPOC, LGBTQ markets also help vendors with stipends, marketing, and resources like professional photography.
Sunday’s market was also a chance for fans of Moodie’s Marjorie to check out the coming soon new home for the restaurant next to the Midtown Square plaza.
There will be several events this week across the city marking Juneteenth including a couple major celebrations in the Central District. The Northwest African American Museum will hold its celebration from 11 AM to 5 PM Wednesday with free admission and more. Africatown Community Land Trust and King County Equity Now, meanwhile, boast “Seattle’s largest Juneteenth celebration” at the nearby Jimi Hendrix Park from noon to 8 PM.
