The exit of a Capitol Hill newsstand will make space for the return to Capitol Hill of Cupcake Royale.
The Seattle-area cupcake chain announced it is taking over the small E Pike space formerly home to Big Little News. Pike/Pine LGBTQ nightlife entrepreneur Joey Burgess and Tracy Taylor, the general manager of nearby Elliott Bay Book Company, ran the unique magazine and champagne shop for three years but even the guidance of one of the most experienced booksellers in the city and the head of a neighborhood family of bars and restaurants couldn’t make the concept stick.
The magazine and news shop closed in May.
It was previously home to much loved vintage and antique shop No Parking.
For Cupcake Royale, the new opening will be a homecoming. Cupcake Royale head Jody Hall built the company into a citywide phenomenon after opening the E Pike location, the company’s largest, in the summer of 2009.
In 2021, Hall changed gears, transitioning the E Pike Cupcake Royale into a new flagship location for her adaptogenic mushroom coffee startup. For now, the E Pike Wunderground Cafe remains one of a kind.
Hall tells CHS the opportunity on E Pike is about Cupcake Royale seeking out smaller shops to display its baked goods. The company celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2023.
Cupcake Royale will open soon at 1102 E Pike. Learn more at cupcakeroyale.com.

We are so thrilled to see Jody take this beautiful space over. It was a place of joy for me and gave me the courage to take on something bigger. That our build out, designed with love, is going to a beloved business woman in our neighborhood, couldn’t make me happier.
THIS IS GREAT! More businesses and less homeless is what will bring the hill back!
Will you seriously stop complaining about the unhoused? You’re disgusting!
@ E15 Resident: *Fewer homeless* is the correct modifier, as ‘homeless’ is a counting noun in this case.
Hmmmmm… I like your style. We could be friends. I wanna use a preposistion so bad at the end of a sentence, but I can’t think of an example sentence to troll you with.
So happy to hear this! I hope they bring back the babycakes, small cupcakes for a small space! :-)
