Police investigating new Seattle hit and run attacks after homeless man run over while sleeping on North Capitol Hill sidewalk — UPDATE

A homeless man who survived being run over while sleeping on the sidewalk along Capitol Hill’s 19th Ave E appears to have been intentionally targeted.

Seattle Police say they are investigating two similar attacks that took place within hours across Seattle early last Saturday morning that sent two people to the hospital after a driver drove onto sidewalks and struck them.

In the Capitol Hill attack, a 39-year-old man suffered lower body injuries and was rushed to Harborview after being run over while sleeping near 19th and Prospect in front of a stretch of businesses including the neighborhood’s Windermere real estate office on the block mixed with single family-style homes and a small business strip.

“The victim was asleep on the sidewalk when he was struck by a vehicle,” SPD’s brief on the February 17th, 3:50 AM incident reads. “The suspect vehicle ran over the victim’s legs and then fled the scene.”

Police say the description of the blue sedan in the 19th Ave E attack matches that of the suspect vehicle in another intentional hit and run earlier that morning around 2:45 AM on Dexter Ave N where the police said a driver sped onto the sidewalk and struck the victim before driving away. “The victim saw the vehicle coming and was able to dive out of the way and avoid being struck head on,” SPD reports.

The victim was treated at the scene by Seattle Fire and then transported to Harborview.

SPD said they are investigating the incidents and working to identify the vehicle believed to have been used in both the attacks.

The February 17th incidents come after two teens were charged earlier this month for hit and run attacks targeting pedestrians along Aurora late last year.

They also come as Seattle Police detectives are investigating the February 10th stabbing death of a homeless man in an alley off 12th Ave. Early Thursday morning, police were also investigating a suspicious death after a man was found dead outside First Hill’s Town Hall.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for SPD told CHS Thursday morning there have been no updates in the investigation.

UPDATE 2/27/2024: CHS has been told the man struck along 19th Ave E was lucky and sustained no serious injuries. SPD has not announced any updates in the cases.

$20 says the asshole who did this is a regular on the SeattleWA and Seattlehobos subreddit.

I’d be happy to take the other side of this. The answer to injuries caused by lawlessness is not more lawlessness.

I’d take that bet and say it’s some extremely dumb and dangerous under 20 year olds that have no real thoughts about anything….

Are the SeattleWA and Seattlehobos Reddit regulars in the room with you right now?

It wasn’t right wing people who murdered or maimed black teenager in CHOP – it was left wing activists and very likely members of the John Brown Gun Club. The Socialist-Marxist Left that night accused the killer(s) of being “Proud Boys,” as I recall.

Is this trying to dox someone from Reddit? Seems like that’d be against this site’s TOS.

This sort of ideologically-driven speculation-as-fact really isn’t helpful.

Wait you’re blaming CHOP for a black teen dying? So what about the black teens who died outside of CHOP, whose fault is that? Seattle? Capitalism’s?

I don’t understand the utility of saying something like this. It’s just divisive speculation. No better than someone saying it’s probably a cop or probably a kia boy.

Not surprising when “news” agencies like KOMO regularly hate on homeless people and repeat that “Seattle is dying” because of them.

Even less surprising when the entire East Precinct (I5 to the Lake, Ship Canal to I-90) has eight officers on duty.

No doubt this is amusing to the people who fear and hate in these comments.

Nobody is amused by a car intentionally hitting a homeless person. That is awful. I agree with the commenters above that this is likely to be a crime committed by juveniles in a stolen vehicle and that these types of crimes are far more common because criminals are emboldened by depolicing and a lack of consequences for actions.

I’m not surprised as the city has accepted lawlessness. This act is 100% unacceptable. I hope the new council along with the Mayor are able to reverse this course.

but yeah … ACAB and all that. Humans don’t need law enforcement. We got this.

What? No idea what your post is saying. Is your post in favor of more law enforcement like my post states?

Don’t hold your breath. There aren’t enough police left on the force, and they can’t hire new ones (who would want that job when a significant portion of the populace doesn’t want them to exist).

It’s going to take years to rebuild SPD. No denying, there are bad cops just like there are bad doctors. We need a police force.

This is incredibly evil and horrifying!!! I often pass by this location and see a homeless person sleeping in the doorway by these businesses. They don’t seem to cause any issues, and they’re never sleeping on the edge of the sidewalk (usually closer to the building entrance). This must have been intentional. So sad :(

REMOVE all tents and homeless people off the streets to avoid future incidents like this.

Not a single person should be allowed to sleep outside.
