Broadway’s Boca food and drink family won’t reopen after founder’s death

The Capitol Hill-centered Boca family of restaurants including its Broadway steakhouse and its sibling Argentine bakery will pass with its founder.

CHS reported here on the death of founder Marco Casas-Beaux leaving Broadway’s Boca Restobar and Grill, the Boca Pizzeria and Bakery shuttered with plywood and in food and drink limbo.

According to legal documents posted on the Broadway building by lawyers for a Boca landlord, the restaurant owes more than $65,000 in unpaid rent as it has been forced to cease operations. Additional court records show thousands more in unpaid taxes to the state.

Conditions around the estate of the restaurant founder have left his daughter Andrea Casas-Beaux who was helping to guide the future of Boca, locked out of the business.

“Due to legal complications outside of Connor and Andrea’s control they were not able to retain any control of the restaurants and therefore have lost access to any and all Boca assets,” a fundraiser plea on the family’s behalf reads. “This has added financial strain to an already overwhelming situation.”

The fundraiser is hoping to collect $5,000 to help return Marcos’s body to Argentina and give his daughter and his coming granddaughter a financial boost.

oh, how sad! The bakery and restaurant were such nice additions to Broadway. It’s tough to run a business these days and stay afloat.

That Boca’s legacy is lost on top of Marco’s death is another tragedy. I loved weekend mornings at the bakery, which had such a great atmosphere, sitting with a pastry and an espresso; best of wishes to his family.

What a sad tale. I was not a customer of the restaurant and bakery, but it’s unfortunate that there will be even more vacant storefronts on Broadway.

Why do businesses stop paying taxes? Lack of cash flow? It’s bound to come back and get them, eventually.

Generally because taxes do not impede continued operation and can be negotiated around with the IRS in the continued hope the restaurant will turn the corner and be able to. Invoices and payroll are much more consequent things to miss for operations.
