Seattle Fire says no hazardous material in threatening envelope delivered to Chabad of Capitol Hill

Seattle Fire and Seattle Police made a hazardous material response Saturday night on eastern Capitol Hill after a suspicious envelope was delivered to the community center of Chabad of Capitol Hill and The Central District.

Rabbi Levi Levitin tells CHS he identified the large, oddly taped parcel with strange writing on it as similar to others recently delivered to synagogues. Those previous envelopes — including one containing a white powder — were determined to have contained no hazardous materials.

SFD said the contents of the envelope recovered from Chabad of Capitol Hill were also “not hazardous.” But that doesn’t mean the act wasn’t a threat.

“Someone is trying to instill fear here in Seattle but we will not be deterred,” Levitin said. “We celebrate life.”

Area Jewish organizations have increased security in recent weeks as war rages in Gaza and Levitin said he has remained in touch with SPD and private security firms as needed.

Chabad of Capitol Hill and The Central District was founded in 2015.
