No injuries reported as SUV flips during Central District rolling gunfight

There were remarkably no injuries as a rolling gunfight left shell casings and bullet damage across several blocks around 23rd Ave and Spruce Tuesday including a Chevy Yukon the flipped during the shootout.

911 callers reported dozens of shots fired just before 4:30 PM as at least two vehicles were reported in an exchange of gunfire near 22nd and Cherry.

Police were soon called to 23rd and Spruce where a 911 caller reported the flipped Yukon SUV and a person fleeing the vehicle with a gun. Police reported the at least one bullet hole could be seen in the vehicle’s windshield.

Bullet damage and shell casings were found throughout the Central District neighborhood but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

Police were searching for people reported fleeing the area on foot and by vehicle and detained one teen at 23rd and Jackson who was later reported released.

The shootout marked the second day in a row of gun violence in the area after a bout of gunfire also left damage but no injuries Monday night near 21st and Union.

UPDATE: Police say the driver of the Yukon called 911 to report the incident after leaving the scene but told officers he did not know why his vehicle had been targeted.

Geeez…rolling around the neighborhood in a Yukon at 4:30 in the afternoon, exchanging gunfire with some supposed nemesis…what a bunch of frickin’ losers. And btw. I don’t care if it was “way worse back in the day…”. This is happening now, on an almost daily basis and it is simply unacceptable. </rant>

In a way it was, but today it is so random. Usually if you weren’t looking for trouble you were OK. Today too many are just walking down the street and can become a victim of crime in broad daylight.

I’ve lived near Union since 1997 and no… it wasn’t “way worse back in the day….” at least not since then. Yeah, back then my neighbor was a bonafide drug dealer (offering drive up service), we had street walkers on Madison, but people just did not randomly shoot up the neighborhood on a daily basis… What ever gangsters were here several decades ago had the sense to keep their arguments a bit more private and to not endanger the rest of the neighborhood so much.. It was shocking when Justin Ferrari was killed in 2012 by a stray bullet meant for someone else. The way these kids are carrying on, it’s absolutely amazing they haven’t hit anything other than buildings and cars so far…

I agree with Nandor here, I have had my troubles in the cd in the years that I have lived here, including a home invasion robbery recently and many years ago some “kids” tried to pull me out of a cab at a narrow part of a street ( cabs were yellow vehicles that used to drive people around, you had to call them on the phone, crazy right? :) )
Gunshots were infrequent, usually at the start of summer, but it was 2-3 shots and it was generally targeted.
These shootings are different, hundreds of shots at 4:30 in the afternoon on one of the busiest thoroughfares in Seattle is beyond the pale.
Even more shocking is that there are no arrests, how is it possible? People know who these criminals are, what will it take to have them turned in?
The police must know who they are at this point. I don’t get it.
I say cameras everywhere like in the uk, facial recognition, gunshot locators,… whatever it takes.
Law abiding citizens lives are being impacted by this, f*ck privacy and f*ck sawant who allowed it to get this bad with her inaction.

It was never this bad.
I think we say that for cold comfort and believe the false narrative to hide the current threat to the citizens of the Central District. The CD was never this uncivilized.
