Tiny Capitol Hill Middle Eastern walk-up counter Yalla is leading the way for a growing group of Seattle restaurants, bars, and cafes organizing to help those caught in the violence of the war in Gaza.
Chef Taylor Cheney has announced details of a citywide fundraising effort for the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund that continues to add new venues on Capitol Hill, across the city, and throughout the region.
“Thank you so very much for everyone’s compassion in this city,” Cheney said in an update on the effort. “I had no idea it would go this way, and felt a little lonely doing our fundraisers at first.”
“We do not feel alone anymore and I want to tell you, you are warming the hearts of my Palestinian friends greatly,” Cheney writes.
Cheney and E Olive Way’s Yalla began their fundraising last month making Atayef with proceeds from the dessert going to support the fund.
The new effort is inspiring similar fundraising at dozens of restaurants with each participating venue holding their own events and specials in the coming days.
One example on Yalla’s home E Olive Way block is Dino’s. The Capitol Hill pizza joint and its Ballard sibling will donate all proceeds from Sunday’s service to the PCRF. At Yalla, meanwhile, Sunday will bring a special pop-up menu of Middle Eastern dishes inspired by Cheney’s recent travels to continue the fundraising effort.

her food is excellent! and her heart is in the right place!!!
cool!
Israeli children have died during this conflict as well. I’m not saying that Israel is faultless, but I’ve seen a lot ‘discrete’ antisemitism attached to similar goings-on around the hill (I’m looking at you, Black Star Farmers/ BLM Memorial Garden). I’d like to know how this money is getting to the children it’s meant for whole circumnavigating the hands of the Hamas government? That’s not meant as a dig at any humanitarianism, and I thinks it’s a valid question.
that’s fair. you should organize something like that
Here’s the website of the organization funds are being directed to in case you’d like to scan for anti-semitism, nothing stands out to me.
