Already endorsed by Mayor Bruce Harrell, Hollingsworth has also added an endorsement from King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay to her roster. The Hudson camp, meanwhile, is hoping to max out on democracy vouchers to keep up
The Alex Hudson campaign says spending in the race for the District 3 seat on the Seattle City Council has reached a new level with her opponent opting to be released from the limitations of the city’s Democracy Voucher program
“We just got word yesterday that the City of Seattle has lifted the fundraising cap for our opponent,” the email sent by the Hudson campaign Tuesday afternoon reads. “That puts us at a significant financial disadvantage,” the fundraising pitch continues.
The Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission says candidate Joy Hollingsworth has been released from the “general spending limit.” The change makes the Hollingsworth campaign ineligible to receive any additional funding from Democracy Vouchers but the candidate is allowed to continue collecting vouchers “as a sign of support.” Collecting the certificates can also help kneecap an opponent’s fundraising.
The change comes as the candidates have been close to neck and neck in campaign contributions with Hollingsworth reporting around $187,000 in contributions and Hudson, $157,000 through the latest reporting.
The spending limit for participating Democracy Voucher city council candidates is $187,500.

The Hollingsworth camp is also seeing its message spread thanks to spending by independent expenditure committees.
A committee from the National Association of Realtors has already supported Hollingworth to the tune of $54,000. Labor-associated groups have pitched in another $18,000.
A “progressive” coalition put up $15,500 for Hudson, her only significant independent expenditure committee contribution. The same progressive PAC, however, also ponied up $8,800 in spending against Hollingsworth.
While the spending on the race has reached a new level, the dollars will likely fall well short of 2019 when a business-backed push against socialist D3 incumbent Kshama Sawant made the election the most expensive political battle in Seattle with more than a $1 million in contributions and spending. Sawant, by the way, was criticized over her refusal to participate in the Democracy Voucher program over concerns that it handcuffed her Socialist Alternative political group’s ability to raise funds.
That year, Sawant’s opponent blamed the influx of cash as he conceded, saying that the massive outlay of PAC spending from the downtown chamber and efforts from the likes of Amazon, Expedia, and Starbucks to back “pro-business” candidates backfired and “played right into Kshama’s hands.”

council member Girmay is a really big endorsement. probably the most popular progressive in the county.
another reason I’m voting for Hollingsworth
Very disappointed to see Alex Hudson spend money attacking a black woman who has had a positive approach. Unfortunate turn of events I honestly didn’t see coming.
Signs of a desperate campaign. she’s all over the place.
yes…let’s make it about race…seriously?
Your reverse-ID politics don’t work here. Hudson is great and I already casted my vote for her!
Running for office is attacking a black woman? lmao
play the race card? mkayyyy
Like I said, Harrell’s pocket. Hudson is no Sawant and will fold accordingly.
Go Joy! After 10 years of Sawant’s nonsense and neglect, people want change rather than more of the same. We need someone with deep community roots to lead us out of this mess.
We like Sawant here and why we voted for her. You are screaming at clouds.
Sawant sucks. Her office could not do the bare minimum in regards to her constituents’ attempts to contact her. I emailed her on several occasions with questions about how to navigate certain issues like the broken unemployment system and a specific public safety concern, and not once did I receive a response from her office, not even a referral to the people who could assist.
The group who protested after the recent daycare was shot up also stated they contacted her office and she did not respond to. You know who she DID respond to? Reporters. She gave them a statement dismissing the concerns of the protesters and stated she would not be increasing security, as they requested.
I didn’t vote to recall her, as I think that process should only be used to remove someone credibly accused of serious crimes, but I absolutely would never have voted for her again. There’s something so distasteful about a rich lady in her mansion who claims to be working for the people but who refuses to acknowledge the actual working class people she represents and their concerns.
To be fair – i just googled her address and her house is not a mansion.
I’d Googled her income, saw she made $450,000 a year plus her husband’s income in 2019 and that she lived in Leschi, so I assumed mansion. Ok, let’s change it to “much more house than I can afford.”
Why we know you’re a fake shill account for the chamber of commerce. Sawant lives in a very modest house. All of your posts are exaggerated desperate lies. Rent free sparky.
Yeah, because we know the progressive way in Seattle is to accuse those you don’t agree with of lying. How persuasive! No wonder you’re winning so many elections! You of all people should find the difference between “lives in a mansion” and “household makes upwards of $600,000 a year” a distinction without a difference.
You want a fact that is undisputable? How about the one in which Sawant wrote a letter to the SPD begging for extra security when some ahole left poop on her lawn, but when the protesters contacted her office begging for more security after the daycare was shot up, she didn’t respond to them but instead issued a statement to Komo News (!!!) dismissing their requests. You can look that up if you don’t believe me.
Wow. You actually voted for her? Really, as much as I detest her, she does not live in a mansion, whatever that is….
The clouds are outside, I don’t care
i didnt enjoy sawant. there’s room for disagreement.
Here, we do not like Sawant. Ten years of uselessness and zero response to her constituents. What exactly did you like about Sawant?
Hmmm, majority disagrees!
She came within 300 votes of being recalled with a 52% turnout. In what world does that constitute being “liked”?
Aside from you and your hyper-progressive, ideologue friends, that is.
What percent did Trump get?
A lot of votes for D3 lmao
I voted for Sawant the first time, but I came to regret it. I will be glad to see the back of her grandstanding, sloganeering, self-promotion, and complete lack of follow-through.
Of course business interests are first on the Hollingsworth agenda.
The conflict of interest is blinding.
what’s Hudson’s plan for public safety? she never answers that question. just says “holistic approach” over and over.
at least Joy wants to invest in alternatives and fully staff our first responder departments. that includes our understand resourced fire department.
it’s always crickets for Hudson
