A man was killed and police were searching for the suspect and the getaway vehicle in a shooting Thursday night near 25th and Union in the Central District.
All details are preliminary at this point and Seattle Police has only confirmed it was conducting an investigation at the scene at this time. UPDATE: SPD confirmed the homicide late Thursday night.
Police were called to the area around 7:45 PM after reported gunfire and found the victim down with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, according to East Precinct radio updates. Police began CPR at the scene but the man was dead by the time Seattle Fire arrived.
SPD says the victim was 45 years old and that it was not known what events led up to the shooting. SPD did not say where the man was found but radio reports did not indicate police entered a residence or building in the area before reporting finding the victim down and unresponsive.
Police were searching for the suspect who reportedly fled in a vehicle. A search was underway for a white Impala possibly involved in the incident.
Witnesses reported hearing between two to six shots.
E Union was closed during the response as police collected evidence. Officers were also checking nearby businesses for security video that may have captured images of the getaway car.
The shooting comes amid an ongoing surge in gun violence across the country and in Seattle. Earlier this year, a series of gun violence incidents near Garfield High School brought increased police patrols and school district security at the 23rd Ave campus. In June, SPD announced a “Community Violence Task Force” would focus efforts and federal funding on four areas of the city including the Central District.
In the East Precinct, gun violence hasn’t been restricted to the Central District. Brother Terrance and Raylando Wilford were shot and killed at Cal Anderson Park in late April and the Capitol Hill road rage killing of Elijah Lewis earlier that month. In July, 20-year-old Essence Greene died of her injuries when she was hit by gunfire that sent multiple people to the hospital as crowds defied police and gathered for a street racing sideshow at Broadway and Pike.
Mayor Bruce Harrell, meanwhile, has included funding for the deployment of gunshot location technology in the city in his latest budget proposal.

JFC-WTF!!! Can you PLEASE follow up with some context? Is it random? Drug related? Gang related? Can we not go out past 7pm in our neighborhood without the fear of getting shot and possibly killed?! The amount of gun violence over the past few years in the CD, South Seattle and Downtown is shocking, heartbreaking and VERY scary. And please tell me what the “Community Violence Task Force “ is doing to help, honestly curious. What is their mission statement, proposed help, action items, and any accountable progress?
Thank you. I second that, I would still like to know what is SPD AND THE MAYOR DOING To MAKE SURE WE DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER CHOP/Chaz? My son Horace Lorenzo Anderson was murdered in 2020 and I’ve still seen no change. Actually it’s gotten worse
I am so, so very sorry Donnitta Sinclair Martin for your very, very horrific loss. My deepest condolences to you and your family. My heart breaks when I think of those most chaotic days and the resulting extremely tragic events to follow…sending much love and prayers to you, your son and family. ❤️
How to tell if someone hasn’t lived in the CD very long (gentrifiers) – talk about how the gun violence is “so much worse than before!” Before what? 5 years ago? Because it’s sure better than it was 10 years ago.
Gentrifiers are annoying as hell (though the first generation gentrifiers may have lived here for 20-30 years now…), but also – this still is awful and we need something more than just a reactive, non-transparent SPD, and sarcastic “it’s better than Chicago/25 years ago/etc.” responses?
You are correct.
Hey Greycat, I was born here, (Group Health on 15th) lived here until 8, then came back at 17. Still here, and now Im 52- so I have some perspective to get angry about. The “gentrifiers” card doesn’t work on me. The seemingly semi random gun violence is shocking. But maybe the lack of story follow-up is partial to blame, as when you read CHS, there is a ton of crimes reported without any updates on details.
Well they’re those of us who recall the CD 35-40 years ago and the sounds of late night gunfire. The difference is the shooting is much more random these days. And at hours when others are out going about minding their own business.
And as to why the SPD haven’t figured this out in a nanosecond as some woud like – two things: you’ve been watching too many crime shows on TV (note that they have to condense the plot into an hour) and the street no-snitch rule is still very much in effect as it has been for time eternal.
Do you have evidence to support that claim? Besides, what’s your point? The notion we should silently tolerate gun violence in CD because of historical injustice is incoherent bullshit. The violence is today’s injustice!
Your claim may be true, but probably not. The murder rate & number of shots fired in Seattle is substantially higher than it was 10 years ago. The CD was already well along into changing demographics 10 years ago, too. (The early 90’s w/ higher crime was 30 years ago.)
Some people have an ideological or vibes reason to ignore the disastrous rise in shootings and murders. But obviously, no one should deal with regular gun violence, whether an old school neighbor or a newer resident.
It’s gun related. Guns should all be banned because our society cannot handle having them. Everyone is brainwashed into thinking this is impossible. Our society is pathetic.
