Seattle Fire back for more ‘live’ training across from Broadway Hill Park

A scene from the March training at the corner

Development of new housing near Broadway Hill Park will bring another opportunity for Seattle Fire Department crews to hone their firefighting skills.

SFD will be at the corner of Federal and Republican this week for three days of live-training involving plenty of real smoke and flames:

Today, the department will have 4-6 fire evolutions spread throughout the day each lasting 15-20 minutes. Residents will see smoke as controlled burns are set inside the vacant apartment structure. All carpet, plastics and toxic synthetic materials have been removed along with required asbestos abatement. The training officers will set wood fires in a controlled method with safety officers on-hand during the exercises.

This is the second round of training in the neighborhood in recent weeks. CHS reported here on a March session involving a 1904-era home part of three properties at the corner across from the park long planned for redevelopment.

SFD says the training conforms to “the strict regulations and rules of the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency.”

“The smoke coming from the buildings during the live-fire is equivalent to smoke from a fireplace,” SFD says. “After the fires are out, most of what you see coming from the structure is steam.”

SFD invites people to watch this week’s training with live-fire elements starting around 9 AM and lasting until around 3 PM each day.

so much construction noise & smoke

It’s unfortunate SFD choose these buildings for exercises, in a neighborhood where we’ve lived through three years of daily pallet and trash encampment fires in Broadway Park, not to mention the occasional propane tank explosion and tent arson. Thankfully, no one was hurt in all of these fires, but it would have been great if SFD found some buildings to practice with in Montlake say, or Wedgewood.
