Any hope the spirit of Capitol Hill gay club R Place would live on in SoDo has been dashed. The Comeback has closed.

Seattle Gay Scene reported details of the “long, drawn out, painful demise” here. The Stranger says The Comeback “abruptly closed its doors Sunday with a last dance and a blowout liquor sale.”

CHS reported on the rise of The Comeback off the Hill after R Place lost its E Pine lease in 2021.

While R Place was fading away, longtime manager Floyd Lovelady was readying plans to bring its heart and soul to the new LGBTQIA+ club with dancing, performances, and good times on 1st Ave south of the stadiums in the industrial mix of commerce, clubs, and nightlife growing in the city’s SoDo neighborhood.

With the shuttering of the Comeback, it looks like R Place’s chapter in the city’s queer nightlife history can be closed.

On Capitol Hill, meanwhile, the purchase of the R Place building hasn’t sparked much life into the corner. Tam Nguyen’s Little Saigon restaurant Tamarind Tree is expanding to E Pine with the purchase of the former R Place nightclub with plans for an overhaul of the auto row-era structure that haven’t made much progress. A plan to use the The Teal Building as a community venue from arts and tech nonprofit Third Place Technologies has also had a quiet start.
