The 300 block of Broadway E is quieter than usual this Monday. Sunday, iconic Capitol Hill coffee walk-up the Vivace Sidewalk Bar served its final customers.

Meanwhile, another business on the block is suddenly closed though this one is supposed to be temporary.

The Capitol Hill location of the Crossroads Trading vintage and secondhand fashion shops has been shuttered since at least last week. The company posted an update to its social media on Thursday, April 27th saying the temporary closure is due to a “security incident” at the Broadway store but provided no additional information.

“We are keeping the store closed for the time being to allow the situation to resolve and to give our staff this time to relax and feel comfortable coming back to work,” the update reads. “We look forward to reopening. In the meantime, please visit our U-District location.”

Inquiries from CHS about the closure and specifics of the incident behind it have not been answered.

UPDATE: A spokesperson for Crossroads tells CHS the store was closed after threats against staff by a former security guard hired from an external security company in a dispute with his employer over pay. “No one was hurt, but we wanted to give our staff this time off while the situation is resolved to rest and feel comfortable returning to work,” the spokesperson said.

The shop has been part of Broadway for more than a decade after expanding on the block after a bodega closed next door in 2010. A giant mural of Stonewall drag queen Marsha P. Johnson was added to the E Harrison wall of the building last year.

In 2022, workers at the store joined a ripple of union activity on Broadway, organizing the Crossroads Workers Union. In March, that group announced it had reached a tentative agreement on a contract with management but it has not made any updates about the deal — or the store’s closure — since.

I was just wondering why the store’s been closed for so long. The UW location is chugging along just fine. Wonder if it was employee precitated? Hopefully they’re getting PTO during the closure.

Kind of ironic considering i witnessed yet another shoplifting “incident” at the U-District store last Friday.
