Lewis was remembered with a vigil at Broadway and Pine on Sunday afternoon
The King County Prosecutor says there is probable cause to hold 35-year-old Patrick Cooney for second degree murder in the killing of Elijah Lewis in an alleged road rage incident Saturday night on Capitol Hill.
Cooney also faces a charge of assault for shooting Lewis’s nine-year-old nephew in the leg during the gunfire.
Prosecutors said Monday they expect a charging decision in the case later this week.
Prosecutors and Seattle Police say Cooney was riding an electric scooter on E Pine just after 5 PM Saturday when he became embroiled in an altercation with Lewis and opened fire into the vehicle the 23-year-old was driving, striking the man with a fatal shot and hitting the child in the calf.
“During this altercation, Suspect Cooney pulled out a handgun he had been carrying on his person and shot into the vehicle three times.” the SPD report on the incident reads. “The shots struck the passenger side front door, the passenger side rear window, and the rear window.”
The child was treated for his injuries and released from the hospital Sunday.
Lewis was shot in the chest and died at Harborview Saturday night after being rushed from the scene where the red Toyota Camry he was driving came to a stop with its back window shot out.
According to the SPD investigation, Lewis and his nephew were traveling eastbound on Pine when they passed Cooney on his scooter and were attempting to turn right onto Broadway when “there was some type of interaction between the scooter and the vehicle.”
“The window was rolled down, words were exchanged between the two parties,” the SPD report reads. That is when police say Cooney pulled out a handgun and opened fire.
Lewis is remembered as a dedicated community builder and entrepreneur in the Central District and Africatown communities.
Cooney remains jailed. Monday, a King County judge set his bail at $2 million. He has not yet entered a plea on the charges. According to court records from a recent traffic case, Cooney has been a Yesler Terrace area resident.

Total disregard for human life and people around. Was it worth it? Really? How stupid
Ummm, also, another a-hole with a gun and a temper who, like most gun owners have zero business owning a gun. We need a total rewrite of the second amendment so it reads as intended by the writers of it. It’s to ensure a national-guard-like militia, not so any schmuck can get a gun and terrorize their community and murder people with it because they are too much of a pussy to resolve their issues in a more sane manner.
It’s part of a gun owners responsibility to always avoid confrontations.
Your statements about the 2nd Amendment are very ignorant. I’m more for people becoming aware of its intent and the responsibilities of gun ownership.
While I endorse your sentiment, you lose all credibility when you use misogynistic language. You would do better to use “pussy” positively.
X 2, thank you
Lol classic Seattle. Language is violence, more so than shooting.
This is such a horrible tragedy.
The shooter does not belong in a society anymore, this is an unacceptable breach of the social contract.
