Broadway’s very busy ballot drop box makes 40-foot move

Democracy is on the move on Broadway. One of the busiest in the bunch, the King County Elections ballot drop box has made a 40-foot move to a new home on the Seattle Central campus.

The new spot for the big metal box is about 40 feet north of where it was first installed in 2016 to augment the county’s transition to by-mail voting.

Though this part of Central’s campus is lined up for eventual development and construction to build a six-story Information Technology Education Center on Broadway, the box’s move right now is more of a shuffle on the busy campus.

The box will remain busy. CHS reported here last November on what to do when the collection box is full — a common situation every election as residents from the densely populated neighborhood mix with voters commuting through Capitol Hill Station or visiting Seattle Central also stop by to drop their ballots.

The sturdy boxes weigh around 1,000 pounds, the county says. And, yes, as part of the move, the work crew cleaned-off the latest round of vandalism to target the box.

The box will next come into service for the April special election to decide on the county’s Crisis Care Centers Levy, a $1.25 billion behavioral health levy to create a new “regional network” of emergency mental health care centers.

This should be enough for the extreme right to think it’s gone.

Looking at the new spot it looks like it’s in a more visible space and within view of a camera on the SCC building, likely a reaction to the recent vandalism…
