Cold — and snowy? — holiday week ahead on Capitol Hill β€” UPDATE: power outage, Winter Storm Warning

Wind chill reported by the NWS

Less than an inch of snow fell on Capitol Hill overnight and streets and sidewalks remained only dusted Monday morning as a week of cold and unsettled weather begins.

National Weather Service forecasters say you will still see a few snowflakes here and there Monday but probably no real snow in the city and on Capitol Hill until Tuesday when a new storm pushes over the city and could bring one to three inches of snow with days and nights of snow then rain continuing into Christmas weekend:

Along the way, it will be cold and icy with temperatures predicted to bottom out below 20 F Wednesday night.

Agencies like theΒ King County Regional Homelessness Authority have been preparing with a schedule of expanded cold weather shelter resources and the Seattle Department of Transportation has its snow plow fleet already on patrol and treating pavement around the city. If it comes to it, stick toΒ the city’s planned snow routesΒ where plowing will take place if conditions warrant.

Monday night, you will want to bundle up to join Chabad of Capitol Hill celebrating the second night of Chanukah with a grand Menorah Lighting at Volunteer Park.

This week’s snow is the second bout of flakes to fall on Capitol Hill heading into winter 2022/2023. Accumulating snow in November didn’t make it too difficult to get around but did contribute to a large power outage. For the most part, Capitol Hill’s dense core with recent rounds of redevelopment and undergrounding of wires and utilities isn’t as fragile as some areas of the city when it comes to trees and bad weather taking out power though the northern edges of the Hill in areas where single family-style housing dominates still go through longer outages. Be ready with a flashlight and a way to charge your phone just in case.

UPDATE 12:40 PM: Seattle City Light reported it was responding to a power outage hitting around 7,000 customers around northern Capitol Hill and Eastlake.

UPDATE 1:13 PM: A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for late Monday evening through Tuesday night for a possible 2 to 7″ of snow around the Seattle area.

UPDATE 4:25 PM: City Light says power has been restored to all customers.
