CHS Pics | Witches, superheroes, and monster dogs in a Hilloween pet parade in Volunteer Park

For all the focus on Seattle’s big city problems, parts of the city can still feel like a small town.

Saturday, the Hilloween season kicked off not with kids trick or treating but with dog and cat parents gathering with their four-pawed little ones in a costumed celebration in Volunteer Park.

The return of the Volunteer Park Halloween Pet Parade over the weekend brought out lions, and witches, monsters and superheroes, and even a hot dog or two. Sadly, no fuzzy friends were dressed as Patty Murray and none of the dogs said they had ever heard of Tiffany Smiley.

The annual Volunteer Park Trust event returned to the schedule in 2022 after recent pandemic cancellations to bring the popular community event back together. This year’s edition included a marching band-led parade and an awards ceremony on the park’s new amphitheater stage.

Capitol Hill this year should continue to hold its place a popular Seattle Halloween season destination.

The nightlife zones are a fun place to dress up Hilloween or no. There are plenty of spooky buildings and landmarks to tour. And the trick or treat area near Volunteer Park is one of the premier candy hot zones in the city.

HILLOWEEN 2022
The Broadway Business Improvement Association will also continue its tradition with plans for Hilloween 2022 taking shape on October 29th. This year’s event will take place that Saturday 1 PM to 4 PM with a free “Kids Halloween Spectacular” carnival hosted by DonnaTella Howe in the AIDS Memorial Plaza above Capitol Hill Station. After, Broadway and area businesses will be ready to hand out candy to young trick or treaters.

There will also be face painting and games, Drag Queen Spooky Storytime with Aleksa Manila, a magician, and the Chaotic Noise Band will be on hand to set kids off on their trick or treating trek down Broadway. Fur children are also invited with plans for another pet costume contest. CHS is, as usual, the happy Hilloween media sponsor.

In addition to the free fun, kids can also enjoy an important new handout this year. Under new statewide spending that surely freaks out Republican candidates for senate, riders 18 and under are now free on public transit including the light rail system. Learn more at hilloween.me.

Does anyone know the winners of the costume contest? I had to leave before they were announced. *
