Seattle Fire was called to rescue occupants including an infant trapped by fire and smoke in a blaze on the upper fourth floor of a First Hill apartment building Sunday night.

SFD said multiple people were rescued from the fire with at least one reported in critical condition.

UPDATE: SFD reports three residents sustained serious injuries related to the fire and were transported to Harborview Medical Center including a woman in her 60s in critical condition, a 60-year-old man in critical condition, and an 81-year-old male in serious condition.

Seattle Fire says extensive damage to the third and fourth floor made the building uninhabitable and displaced 63 occupants. Red Cross and City of Seattle agencies were working to provide emergency shelter at the Garfield Community Center.

According to Seattle Fire radio updates, an infant was rescued from the building as others were evacuated or were being helped by SFD crews to escape reported heavy smoke. UPDATE: “Crews utilized a 35-foot ladder to rescue one woman and her infant son from their fourth-floor unit,” SFD reports. “Both mother and child were not injured.”

The fire was first reported around 8:20 PM in the building at 823 Madison. That address is listed as the The Madison Apartments, also home to First Hill nightclub Vito’s.

Smoke was also reported rising from the roof of the building.

The fire was reported as under control as the fight continued just before 9 PM.

The call was upgraded to a “three-alarm” response due to “reports of multiple people to rescue” from the building bringing more vehicles and crews to the intersection of 9th and Madison.

Madison was closed in both directions during the response to the fire.

UPDATE: SFD says the fire started spread in the ceiling void space and damaged multiple fourth units. Amid the rescue efforts, one service dog was helped from the building and reunited with their handler, SFD reports.

Five firefighters were also evaluated during the response. Seattle Fire says two were transported to Harborview for further care.

UPDATE 6/13/2022: Investigators have ruled the fire accidental:

Investigators ruled the fire was accidental, caused by an open flame that tipped over onto a mattress and ignited it. The fire spread to other combustible materials, then burned through the roof and void spaces

The blaze caused an estimated $1 million in damage, SFD says.
