Two Capitol Hill food and drink stories, it turns out, are intertwined.
Remember the closure of E Pike’s Capitol Coffee Works we just reported this morning?
Remember the Portland-born vegan Jewish deli with nationwide aspirations announcing its plans to open on Capitol Hill in an undisclosed location we reported on earlier this month?
Same place.
The non-disclosure agreements have been lifted and the roasted carrot lox and hearts of palm whitefish are being prepared. Ben and Esther’s is coming to E Pike.
The small chain announced the location for its first Seattle expansion — “right in the heart of Capitol Hill <3” — over the weekend. Thanks to the many CHS readers who sent tips.
The company is planning a September 1st opening.
It’s not clear exactly how the deal for Ben and Esther’s to join E Pike played out. CHS reported on the plans for owners Pipo Bui and Sebastian Simsch to sell the Coffee Works business to the business group behind Victrola Coffee in early May. By the end of the month, Ben and Esther’s announced its Seattle plans but said it couldn’t yet disclose the location for the new deli.
The new deli will join a robust Jewish food and drink scene amid the golden age of Capitol Hill bagels ushered in by the opening of Rubinstein Bagels on 15th Ave E last year. The neighborhood also has its own homegrown Jewish deli. Dingfelder’s Delicatessen opened at E Pine and 14th in 2018 with stacked-high corned beef and pastrami sandwiches, kosher hot dogs, knishes, smoked fish, and bagels.
Now, the tiny 20-foot by 40-foot E Pike retail space and mezzanine will be readied for the new venture. Prior to the coffee shop, it had previously been home to the condo sales office for First Hill’s Luma project which had moved in after Emerson Salon move out.
Ben and Esther’s will soon neighbor shops Retail Therapy and Frame Central in the building. Ox Billiards opened up in the building’s basement in 2021.
The three-story, masonry building has a history richer than condo sales offices, of course. It was built in 1912 as the flagship store in Seattle for the then one-year-old motor vehicle start-up Chevrolet.
