Capitol Hill diner Glo’s will be closed for weeks after an overnight fire damaged the exterior and walls of the E Olive Way building it still calls home.
Seattle Fire responded to the 1600-block blaze just after 2:30 AM and quickly knocked the fire down but not before the exterior and back wall of the restaurant was heavily damaged.
There were no reported injuries.
Neighboring bars The Doctor’s Office and Captain Blacks were more fortunate suffering only minor damage from the fire and smoke.
There were reports of fireworks being lit in the area around the time of the early Monday incident but Seattle Fire has not provided more information yet on what caused the fire or the extent of damage to the building.
With her restaurant up for a move to a new space currently under construction above Capitol Hill Station, owner Julie Reisman said the fire and closure will be a major challenge with the new location likely not ready for Glo’s to move in until later this fall at the earliest.
The “Glow Up” crowdfunding campaign to raise money from the community to help power the construction of the new Glo’s will now also need to go toward helping the old Glo’s and its employees get through the rough situation and a potentially lengthy closure.
Meanwhile, the fire is another blow to Capitol Hill’s brunch and breakfast scene. 15th Ave E favorite Coastal Kitchen has also been closed indefinitely after a driver smashed into its entryway last month.
UPDATE: SFD tells us the fire “occurred in a storage area in between two businesses” but investigators were unable to determine what caused the blaze. Damages are estimated at $5,000 but repairs will be required to the back wall where firefighters had to cut through to access flames before Glo’s can safely reopen.

This is so very sad. Thank god None of the other surrounding business were destroyed. Those businesses are my favorite haunts for many years. Hope they find out who the moron was that started the fire, but highly unlikely.
“a storage space between buildings” sounds like a like an insurance claim nightmare. Here’s to a quick resolution.
Ah what a shame
That photo makes it look a lot worse than just $5k in damage. Glad no one was hurt.
How awful! I agree with the other commenter: it looks like a lot more than $5k of damage. I’m glad no one was hurt!
Let’s put our money where our mouths are and rally the support needed for this irreplaceable institution!
