Checking in with Coastal Kitchen after another blow to Capitol Hill brunch

With Capitol Hill’s brunch scene taking a significant blow with the indefinite closure of Glo’s after an overnight fire earlier this week, CHS checked in on another popular neighborhood breakfast and more spot to find out how their recovery is coming along.

Jonathan Tweten of Coastal Kitchen said they’re nearly ready to begin construction and are expecting the city to issue permits soon for the repairs needed to stabilize the building and rebuild the 15th Ave E restaurant’s entry after last month’s bizarre ramming collision that left the popular venue’s doorway in shambles but fortunately caused no serious injuries. The driver has been charged in the incident.

Tweten said he expects about three to four weeks of construction once the permits are finally issued and work can begin.

In the meantime, Tweten said Coastal has tried to keep “as many of the staff as we can” with a goal of bringing back as many workers as possible when the restaurant reopens. While some are continuing to be paid, others have had to be let go or moved on to other work.

Tweten’s family company has owned the restaurant for six years now after reopening the popular eatery under its new ownership in 2016. He used to live up here but moved away and isn’t around the neighborhood as much as he used to be. With the closure of QFC and the challenges of the pandemic, 15th Ave is “going through change,” Tweten said.

“It has been a weird couple years,” Tweten said, “But we’re still very bullish on the future of Seattle.”

Coastal Kitchen is located at 429 15th Ave E. You can keep track of updates on its Instagram page @coastalkitchencapitolhill.

Ok, this isn’t a suggestion. This is obligatory – what can we do as a community to save Glo’s (and sustain and support Coastal Kitchen ,too, of course!)?!? Like, there should be links provided at the bottom of this article and a rally cry! If no one else has initiated it, I’m happy to put my money where my mouth is and start the crusade! How is this not a top headline across all Seattle publications????
