A man suffered a “severe impact” and was taken to the hospital after he was struck and briefly trapped under a Metro route 11 bus Thursday morning near 17th and Madison, a busy intersection in the middle of the E Madison bus rapid transit construction project.
According to Seattle Fire, the 65-year-old was treated at the scene and taken to Harborview in stable condition. He suffered abrasions and was suffering lower back pain and a possible chest injury, according to Seattle Fire radio updates on the just before 11:15 AM incident.
According to a witness who was aboard the westbound 11, the bus suddenly came to a stop on E Madison after Trader Joe’s by the Central Co-op and in the midst of the new bus route construction. According to the witness, the man who was struck appeared to have been part of a construction crew working in the area. UPDATE: A SDOT representative said the injured man was not working on the Madison RapidRide G project or other SDOT construction work. A King County Metro spokesperson said that the incident is under investigation but initial reports indicate a “pedestrian reportedly slipped and fell and came into contact with the bus.”
According to East Precinct radio, the man was pulled from underneath the bus after being struck by it.
We’ve reached out to Metro and the Seattle Department of Transportation which is managing the bus route construction to learn more about the incident.

My good friend, who is 70, fell on that intersection about 10 days ago. She was walking across the street and the asphalt gave away and she went flying. Went to the emergency room with a big cut on her forehead, all the skin peeled off of her right hand, a nice big abrasion on her upper lip and nose and severe bruising on her chest and knees. That intersection should have been closed completely, not just very shoddily patched. My friend is almost healed except for the painful chest. Thank goodness she didn’t break anything. or have a concussion.
