Maybe Capitol Hill is getting soft. Or, maybe, the giant fuzzy buddies featured in the big “Ultimate Pet Portrait” mural at Broadway and Pine are just too sweet.
But the huge yellow commercial work by Seattle artist Ariel Parrow that went up a few weeks back on the side of the old South Annex building on E Pine will be officially unveiled this week having remained mostly unmarred by tagging and vandalism — even if the represented critters include a very un-Capitol Hill mix of apparent purebreds, no mutts, and no pit bulls. The pet rabbit? On brand.
Tuesday, Chewy, the $17 billion online retailer of pet food and “other pet-related products,” will celebrate the mural and hosting “a fun gathering for pets and pet parents” with a tent in Cal Anderson Park with treats and giveaways starting at 11 AM just across from the E Pine artwork.
Chewy says it is also donating $100,000 in food and supplies to local shelters and will recognize two PAWS Seattle volunteers during Tuesday’s event.
The outreach comes as Chewy is adding a new Pacific Northwest headquarters as the Dania Beach, Florida-based company continues to grow. Despite increased efforts to create and upgrade space and attract new tenants in Pike/Pine, the new Chewy offices won’t be anywhere near Capitol Hill. We were hoping the old Stranger officers might be put to use. Instead, Chewy’s new PNW HQ is in Bellevue not on Bellevue. Woof.
The mural’s Capitol Hill location, meanwhile, will be redeveloped but construction is still a long way off. While there aren’t any plans for significant office space as part of the project, the planned redevelopment will create a new YouthCare Academy to provide homeless youth education and employment opportunities plus eight stories of affordable housing in a mix of preservation, adaptive reuse, and new construction.
Meanwhile, you also might have seen Parrow’s work in recent months at First Hill’s Museum of Museums and on the other side of the Hill where this very appropriate subject matter was featured in 2019 as part of the ongoing Hill House Mural project.

I noticed the mural, right around the corner from MudBay. #ShopTheHill #BuyLocal
Love the pigeons! Very cool mural. Thanks for sharing the story!
Love it – very nice!
Love the mural relative but it’s super marred by the logo, which reminds you it’s actually an ad.
I too wish it were celebrating mutts, since purebreds are largely restricted to those with a lot of money, and we have no shortage of adoptable pets sitting in shelters.
I know the article says otherwise, but other than the corgi they look like mutts to me. The black dog looks like a lab mix (purebred black labs don’t generally have a white mark on their chest) and the second one over could be a mix as well.
We should never assume. My Doberman is in this painting, she passed away in 2020. She was backyard bred and we rescued her from CA when she was 3 months. Not all dogs are purebreds even if they look like it and we’ve only ever adopted
This is awesome! I love the cheerful yellow. I do wish Chewy was located on the Hill rather than Bellevue, but can’t say I blame them.
Bellevue is much better considering this mural already has to be removed bc of constant vandalism
Really nice mural. Wish the graffiti “artists” would keep their spray paint signatures off of it.
I walked by it today. Predictably, there are already a few tags on it. Honestly, who does that??
Yes we can only what kind of person vandalized a pet portrait. My dog is in this and chewy has to remove the whole portrait bc they had to go weekly to clean it, they couldn’t keep doing it. It’s sad, only lasted a month. Embarrassing
It’s too bad this beautiful mural has to be removed, only after a month, bc it has been vandalized so much. My deceased dog is in this mural. Who vandalizes a pet painting?? Really disappointed. Shame on the people who choose to disrespect property
