Man shot and killed on Summit Ave

(Image: SPD)

A man was shot and killed on a Summit Ave sidewalk Sunday night and police say they are searching for suspects.

Callers reported gunfire just before 6:30 PM in the 1700 block of Summit Ave where SPD says officers found a man down on the sidewalk suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. “Seattle Fire Department medics transported the man to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries,” SPD reports.

Police were looking for two possible suspects and a possible getaway vehicle identified by witness account but made no immediate arrests.

The man who was killed was believed to have been a resident in a nearby building, according to East Precinct radio reports. Seattle Fire reports he was in his mid 30s.

Police were reported interviewing witnesses and people who may have known the man.

SPD says its homicide detectives are investigating and that anyone with information can call the violent crimes tip line at (206) 233-5000.

The shooting comes amid an increase in gun violence officials say stems from pandemic social and economic conditions, social service cutbacks, and the prevalence of firearms. Mayor Bruce Harrell has also backed a “hot spot” approach to addressing the concerns around shootings and street disorder.

This is the reported seventh homicide in Seattle so far in 2022.

How can the East Precinct be so close to all these gunshots yet never catch anybody? Does SPD expect us to just give them more money so they can continue to show up after and take notes? If they get more funding we deserve promises. SPD will ask for more money yet not reduce overall crime.

You might be thinking of a movie called Minority Report.

Obviously no one can stop a crime after it’s happened. We need to do more to address the root causes leading to this type of violence, but also need effective policing to hold the perpetrators responsible and keep them off the streets.

You seem to have a very distorted view of how law enforcement and the police force work. Cops aren’t just sitting in the east precinct building waiting for the phones to ring. They are patrolling ALL of the east precinct when not responding to active calls. And the less of them that there are, the less ground they can cover and the slower it takes for them to get to the scene of a crime.

Also, where are you getting your data that the police “never catch anybody”? While they may not catch everybody they do catch some (most?) that they are able to get data/evidence/leads on. What do you think all that “note taking” is for?

Completely reasonable to expect SPD to be at every shooting before it happens. Shootings aren’t sudden at all. The police are certainly not without their issues but your bad faith is ridiculous. You’re not fooling anyone.

Hey it took less than a week for the police to track down and arrest a suspect in Portland for this murder. Read and learn a thing or two about how showing up after and taking notes is the real legwork of solving crimes and catching criminals. It is a sheer impossibility for the police to be everywhere at all times to prevent any and all crimes.

Sorry hearing someone was murdered. Crime is out of control and most people around here want to go easy on them. Saturday I awoke to two gunshots just before 4:55am just northeast off Cal Anderson.

Lol “go east on them?” Is your solution just give SPD more money to do what they want? We’ve seen they can manage themselves. Yes, something needs to be done about the fun violence but SPD has shown us time and time again they don’t know how to do their job well. They’re still on federal oversight. Don’t forget.

Is it “going easy on them” when the police fail to even stop or find the perpetrators and endlessly ask the public to fill the cops in on what happened?

You don’t even get to the part where we “go easy on them” if the cops are too lazy or inept to even stop these things in progress and that is a long long standing reality long before the pandemic.

Please tell us, in your infinite wisdom, how are police supposed to stop an in progress shooting that took, literally, a minute to happen and for the suspects to drive off? Oh, I forgot they are mind readers with instantaneous teleportation abilities!

The only way they could possibly hope to even stop something like this from happening is if there was a cop stationed on every corner, round the clock. But that would require, you guessed it, more money for the police force. Of course, would you want a cop on every corner 24 hours a day? I think many of you would be up in arms over it the minute it happened.

First of all, no one expects them to be able to reliably stop perpetrators as they’re shooting someone – I’m not sure why you wrote that.

In terms of finding them, they often do. If you look at SPD’s tweets, you’ll often see lots of people replying within minutes/hours claiming SPD is “useless” because they haven’t found the perpetrators. Of course, performing investigations and interviewing witnesses takes time (yes, “asking the public”, which you so casually deride, is part of this), and they often apprehend suspects shortly thereafter.

Based on the stuff you’re writing, it doesn’t seem like you fully understand SPD’s job, or you think it’s much simpler than it really is.

It’s almost as if we don’t have enough public safety personnel to effectively patrol the city so they are forced to be reactive to maximize their limited resources rather than working to prevent crime via proactive policing. Seems like a great opportunity for Oliver and the other community groups to come in and prove how their approach is better.
