Capitol Hill’s proliferation of street dining tents and sidewalk patios will, indeed, stay into 2022 — and, thanks to a new extension of the program, free permits will be available through January 31, 2023 as Seattle looks at making the program permanent.
Councilmember Dan Strauss, District 6 – Northwest Seattle, and chair of the Land Use Committee, announced he is introducing legislation to extend free cafe street and outdoor dining permits into 2023.
The program enables restaurants and other retail storefronts to utilize streets outside of their businesses for outdoor dining or displays. CHS reported here on the proliferation of installations throughout Pike/Pine and across Capitol Hill.
In the announcement, Lewis thanked newly sworn-in Mayor Bruce Harrell for supporting the continuation of the program and said he hopes to continue work to make the program permanent.

These help “activate” streets and are huge improvement versus parking.
If this concept is to become permanent, I would hope that restaurant owners will make an effort to upgrade their outdoor spaces. As it is, many of them are flimsy, cheap-looking structures which have a negative impact on our streetscapes.
