The way this pandemic is going, we’re going to need a hell of a lot more than pickleball to get us through the days. But the pastime sport has helped people keep moving and has made the city’s netted sports courts busy centers of outdoor activity.
To cap off a $50,000, three-year study of the pastime sport — really — Seattle Parks is conducting a survey to find out more about how people want to use its outdoor courts and is looking for feedback from “tennis and pickleball players on how we can best support the growth of pickleball, a fast-growing sport in Seattle and the U.S” — emphasis theirs!
You can take the 10-minute Seattle pickleball survey here through February 8th.
Parks says the results of the survey and the 2019-started study will be used to help plan immediate improvements like “dual striping” existing tennis courts for pickleball “for which some funding is available now” as well as plan development options for “future dedicated pickleball courts” which would need to be funded.
On Capitol Hill, Miller Community Center’s court space has remained consistently busy with pickleballers. Meanwhile, Cal Anderson’s sports courts are already oversubscribed. In 2012, Seattle Parks recommended that dodgeball and bike polo could remain part of approved activities on the courts following successful pilot programs.

I bought a pickleball racket a year ago thinking I’d swing by Miller when the pickleball nets are out and just start playing with a friend. But I can’t find any info on the parks website about “open play” times. When I asked people who were playing there one time if I could join, they said it was a private group event. I’m so confused.
Come to Ohio we are friendly and will let you jump in a game anytime.
No private group event, unless they rented the court. Please call Miller Community Center to register. I would suggest registering together with a friend 👍
I started playing fall of 2019. Went to New Zealand and it was exploding there. I started in a group when I got back to Ohio. I’ve started a winter group this winter and we have had more and more people showing up. Thank goodness some are leaving for Florida!
