Capitol Hill to begin 2022 without Dick’s Drive-in

Capitol Hill will begin next year without one of its most popular places to hang out and grab an affordable meal.

Dick’s Drive-ins announced it will close its Broadway location starting in December to overhaul the 67-year-old restaurant’s infrastructure:

Our Broadway location will close starting Monday, December 13th, for remodel. This location has not been remodeled since it was first built in 1954. Although the outside will look the same, inside we are getting new plumbing, electrical, built-in coolers, equipment, etc. We hope to reopen sometime in spring of 2022.

Dick’s says it is planning “food truck visits” at the location during the closure.

According to city permits, the work includes “replacement of exterior glazing” around the busy kitchen.

Earlier this year, CHS reported on Dick’s getting slapped with citations after worker health, safety, and COVID complaints involving locations including the Broadway drive-in.

In its message, Dick’s didn’t address the health safety issues but did thank the family that has owned the Broadway property for decades for working with them on the project. “It’s a wonderful example of one family business working through the generations with another,” the Dick’s announcement reads.

The property is owned by the Sandbloom family after a 1995 “estate settlement” transferred ownership from Dick’s. Its stretch of Broadway has been busy with investment and planning as the development plans for the light rail station across the street has taken shape and the parcel home to the Broadway post office spawned a six-story mixed-use development while the land to the west and to the north of Dick’s has also been redeveloped.

Would have been great if they got rid of the parking lot. Man those drivers love to try to run over pedestrians.

This is temporary, but for me it is personally a death knell. Capitol Hill has taken such a damn hard beating in the last 2 years.

Relax everyone. “We hope to reopen sometime in spring of 2022.” I love this place too but a couple months without it as they make much-needed updates isn’t gonna break anyone!
