The skies above Capitol Hill used to be filled with cranes. Saturday, the installation of one of the giant tower cranes for the project to create new LGBTQ-affirming senior housing on Broadway will close the street to all traffic, buses, the streetcar, and bicyclists and pedestrians between Pine and Pike.
Community Roots Housing says the street closure for the crane installation for Pride Place will begin around 4 AM Saturday and could stretch into the night as late as 9 PM though contractors are hopeful the work could be wrapped up by the afternoon.
Saturday, November 20th, 2021 – Installation of Tower Crane
o SDOT and Metro have approved a full closure of Broadway between East Pike and East Pine for the installation of the onsite tower crane.o Mobile crane will be staged in the parking lot on the east side of Broadway to hoist sections of the onsite tower crane into place.
o Closure will begin at 4AM and will run as late as 9PM. The goal is to have the crane installed and Broadway re-opened early to mid-afternoon, but the closure will run later if necessary.
o Streetcar will not be operating that day to accommodate this closure, and Metro bus service will run until 7AM, after which the routes will detour around this stretch of road.
o Broadway will be fully closed to through traffic, including bike lanes, northbound and southbound vehicular/bus/streetcar traffic, and pedestrian traffic at the east and west sidewalks. Access will be maintained to all local businesses during this time for pedestrian foot traffic. Access to the businesses on the east side of Broadway will be from East Pike, and access to businesses on the west side of Broadway will be from East Pine.
o Uniform Police Officers will manage the intersections at Broadway/East Pike and Broadway/East Pine to safely detour traffic and allow local traffic through to businesses.
Along with the First Hill Streetcar, Metro says the South Lake Union Trolley will also be shut down over the weekend due to construction near its downtown route.
Pride Place broke ground in September. The preservation-boosted, eight-story development dedicated to serving lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer seniors will feature 3,800 square feet of commercial space and a 4,400-square-foot senior and health services center below 118 units of studio and one-bedroom apartments.
More closures of Broadway for construction will come beginning November 30th as utility work begins in the area around the development. For about six weeks, Broadway will be closed “to standard vehicular traffic” between Pine and Pike from 7 AM to 4 PM on Mondays through Fridays. “Buses, Streetcar, and bike traffic” will be able to pass through and the east-side sidewalk will be open to pedestrians. Police will be stationed at the intersections “to safely detour traffic and allow local traffic through to businesses.”

Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky (hardiboard).
Little boxes on the hillside and they all look just the same.
Oh stop it. I like the design, I like that they’re preserving some of the old building, and it’s a great project that will provide housing for LGBTQ seniors. This is a good thing people!
They are preserving the bare minimum and constructing a boring box with a tacky rainbow. Most of the new architecture is cheap and blah
Hmm….I was at QFC late Saturday morning and both the buses and the streetcar were running and there was no sign of any crane, so I’m guessing this has been rescheduled?
