Capitol Hill and nearby neighborhoods made it through the worst of this week’s “bomb cyclone” winds with a Sunday of downed trees and branches, road hazards, and a mostly intact power grid.

Winds were predicted to continue and eventually die down as the storm passes north off the coast of Washington. Gust above 35 MPH were reported on some areas of the Hill while far out across the Olympic Peninsula, the state’s coast was pounded by huge waves and higher winds.

At one point Sunday night, Seattle City Light reported more than 100 different outages in the city with around 33,000 customers without power. Around Capitol Hill and the Central District, the area’s western core showed mostly no power grid issues while leafy areas to the northeast and southeast bore the brunt of utility damage in this area of the city.

Collisions and road hazards were reported near Mercer and Boren, 15th and Boyer, Broadmoor Drive, the 1800 block of 24th Ave E, Lakeview and Belmont, the 1800 block of E Lynn, and the 1700 block of 17th Ave.

While the winds are expected to calm after Monday night, the storms will keep coming. Later in the week, “an atmospheric river” is predicted to drench the city but clear in time for a mostly drier but cooler Halloween on Capitol Hill:

LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/…An atmospheric river will be over the area on Thursday for a rainy day with snow levels above 6500 feet. The plume of moisture aimed at the region will sag south of the area on Friday with rain tapering and lowering snow levels. There is fairly good consensus in the ensembles that an upper ridge will move over the area next weekend for a stretch
of mainly dry weather.
