Police make Broadway arrest after man opens fire in Cal Anderson Park — UPDATE

Police took the reported shooter into custody on Broadway Sunday night after a round of gunfire in nearby Cal Anderson Park.

All information in this report is preliminary and has not yet been confirmed with Seattle Police or Seattle Fire. No gunshot victims were reported. UPDATE: SPD has confirmed that is investigating the shots fired incident in Cal Anderson and the basic details of our report. UPDATE x2: SPD’s “significant incident report” brief is included at the end of this post and confirms most of the details reported by CHS while adding a few more details.

Multiple callers reported gunfire in the park around 10:30 PM and the involved vehicle leaving the scene last seen at Broadway and Pine.

Police stopped the driver at Broadway and John and took him into custody. According to East Precinct radio updates, the man had a serious head laceration and told police he had been assaulted in Cal Anderson and “may have used his gun to defend himself” as his “friends were being attacked.”

Seattle Fire was called to the scene of the arrest to treat the suspect and transport him to Harborview.

There were no additional victims reported at the scene along Broadway or in the park.

Police reported recovering a handgun in the Broadway traffic stop and officers found shell casings on or near the park’s sportsfield.

In late July, police investigating a reported self-defense shooting in Cal Anderson said the shooter told officers he opened fire to ward off attackers in a robbery attempt over wagering in a late night basketball game.

UPDATE: Here is SPD’s brief on the investigation:

On 08-08-2021 at 2225 hours, East patrol responded to the area of Cal Anderson park for a report of multiple shots heard and a subject reportedly seen with a gun. Patrol arrived and things appeared to be rather calm within the park, however one subject was seen walking away from the scene and entering a black sedan. That subject had a significant amount of blood on his head and was believed to be involved in the incident. The vehicle left the scene west bound on E Pine St and was quickly located by officers coming into the area. A high-risk stop was attempted to try to investigate further and conduct community caretaking on the injured subject due to the significant injuries observed. The subject exited the car, covered in blood, stating that he had a firearm. He was cooperative and detained without incident while additional investigation occurred at the park. The subject had a significant blunt force injury to the back of his head and claimed he used his firearm to defend himself and his friends. Evidence of a shooting was located within the park and eyewitness accounts seem to corroborate the driver’s story as no gunshots victims came forward or were located in the area or at local hospitals. The subject’s gun was in plain view in the vehicle and the subject was found to not have a valid CPL. The vehicle was impounded pending a search warrant to recover the firearm for unlawful carry as the driver could not give consent due to being transported by Medic 1 to Harborview Medical Center.

I heard like 10 shots or more. Small pops like a firework, and someone was yelling something over and over. And when I looked outside people were fleeing Cal Anderson.

So yeah, can’t wait to move.

Ever since CHOP,. people who don’t live in the immediate area have been driving in and causing problems. The strip of land behind the park along Nagle Pl. is regularly being fought over by rival armed drug sellers, and assorted armed others looking for crime to commit.

Not a great look for the new H mart and expected – hoped-for gentrification that’s coming for that block. The whole idea of a walkable market – mall there seems counter-intuitive with line of sight 100 – 500 yards away a regular crime zone.

I wonder if SPD will bother to enforce existing laws, knowing full well our likely new city attorney won’t prosecute.

I wonder if SPD will bother to enforce existing laws…

So SPD arrested the suspect, so seems like they’re “enforcing existing laws”.

…knowing full well our likely new city attorney won’t prosecute.

Do you have evidence that the city attorney won’t prosecute someone arrested for firing a weapon in a public park or are you just regurgitating right wing media anti-Seattle lies?

Just kidding, we all know it’s the latter!

It sounded like there was some kind of event happening in Cal Anderson that night (crowds, music, maybe related to SeaFair). Was it spillover from that?

There’s dodgeball every Fri/Sat/Sun night in the tennis court. Always a crowd, and always blasting music.

They got outta dodge when it went down tho.

The event was the AIDS Memorial Centerpiece celebration. I have a really hard time imagining that anyone attending the event to celebrate the memorial would be firing a gun – although these days anything in possible. But I keep looking for information about whether this was possibly a targeted anti-gay shooting.

Given the regularity of drama along Nagle I highly doubt this was anti-gay targeting. Likely just run of the mill criminality.

Removing the parking along Nagle so the drug dealers and gang members can’t park behind Seattle Central’s activity center and book store would be a step in the right direction.

…and building obstacles in the driveway entrance to the pumphouse where they regularly park their vehicles.

Adding paid parking would probably do it.

I saw someone lying on the sports field immediately after the shots went off. Does anyone know if that person was hurt?

Oh boy, we must have some truly silly laws for this to make any sense.

that’s kinda what I was thinking… if it was in plain view a CPL wouldn’t be necessary, right? and the plain view doctrine and the fact the gun was reported to have just Allegedly been used in a crime I don’t see how a search warrant is necessary….

I bet if it was someone from black bloc or Antifa they woulda ransacked the car anyway and slashed the tires before even determining if they had the right person.

I’m pretty sure that you cannot carry a loaded weapon in a vehicle period with out a license in Washington.

One would think that a warrant wouldn’t have been entirely necessary, but they were probably being overly cautious, as a case can be ruined by messing something like that up….as there wasn’t any immediate danger from the weapon, why not be more careful and not risk the evidence not being able to be used in court.
