The annual celebration has been a part of the city since the 1940s. “Originally part of the International Festival, it would be known over the years as the East Madison Mardi Gras and the Pacific Northwest Black Community Festival,” organizers say. The celebration is credited for being the inspiration behind SEAFAIR.

CHS covered the 2020 parade and “Divest, Reinvest” rally here as hundreds gathered for the celebration following weeks of sometimes violent clashes between police and protesters in the city.
