The movement to bring ranked choice voting to King County won’t be a rush decision to try to get the measure on the November ballot.
King County Councilmember Girmay Zahilay said Monday he is pulling back on a proposal to move elections for county positions to the system allowing voters to rank candidates in order of preference.
“Most of my colleagues shared our interest but understandably wanted more time to work through the details without the fast deadlines associated with this Novemberβs ballot,” Zahilay said about the decision.
The voting system has grown in popularity. Advocates for ranked choice voting say it more accurately captures voter preference and eliminated expensive runoff elections. This summer’s primary for the New York Cityβs mayoral election was conducted by ranked choice.
